AYRES, PHILIP, of Cottingham, Northants.; b. 1638; at school under Busby (monumental inscription in Amersham Church, cited Lipscomb, Bucks., iii, 172); lived for some years in Spain; tutor in the family of Montagu Garrard Drake, Amersham, Bucks., where he lived until his death; resident at St. John’s Coll. Oxford as tutor to Drake’s son when an undergraduate there; author, Lyric Poems made in imitation of the Italians, 1687, and other works; dedicated his Mythologia Ethica, or Three Centuries of Aesopian Fables in English, 1689, to his “kinsman” Lewis Maidwell (qv); d. 1 Dec 1712.
