In 1860, John Mappin broke away from Mappin Brothers and started Mappin & Company. He was joined 2 years later by his brother-in-law George Webb. Mappin, Webb and Co was formed in 1864. Mappin & Webb Ltd was first recorded in 1889, based in Sheffield. The original London business, Mappin Brothers, was aquired by Mappin & Webb Ltd in 1903.
