Oxford, matr. 1 Apr 1664, aged 14; accompanied Edward Montagu, 1st Earl of Sandwich, on his embassy to Spain, 1666-8; Assistant Master of the Ceremonies from 23 Mar 1668; Grand Tour (with Hon. Sydney Montagu) 1668-70; returned to England 30 Jan 1671; on outbreak of Dutch War in 1672 joined Royal Navy as volunteer under Earl of Sandwich; killed in explosion of HMS Royal James in action off Southwold Bay, 28 May 1672. Monument in south aisle of nave, Westminster Abbey.
