ALLAN, EDWIN FRANCIS, eldest son of Francis Allan, Clapham, Surrey, tea dealer, and Eliza --- (1881 Census); b. 10 Nov 1867; adm. 5 Jun 1883; elected to Christ Church, Oxford 1885, matr. 16 Oct 1885; entered Diplomatic Service; student interpreter in China 26 Aug 1891, serving at Hankow 1891-6, when he retired on grounds of health; went to New Zealand; on editorial staff The Wellington Post; moved to Australia 1903; on staff The Argus, Melbourne, until 1919; m. 1900 Stella Mary Allan, journalist, dau. of Daniel Henderson, Kaiapoi, South Island, New Zealand, clerk; d. at Armadale, New South Wales, Australia 2 Feb 1922.
