        DICK, SIR ROBERT HENRY, eldest son of Dr Robert William Dick, Surgeon EICS Bengal, Tullymet, Perthshire, and Charlotte Maclaren, East Haugh, near Pitlochry; bapt. 6 Aug 1786; in school lists 1795, 1801, boarder 16 Jan 1798 (Clapham); probably the Dick who played cricket against Eton at Lord’s 31 Jul 1801; left 1802; Ensign, 75th Foot 22 Nov 1800; Lieut., 62nd Foot 27 Jun 1802; Capt., 78th Foot 17 Apr 1804; Maj., 24 Apr 1808; 42nd Foot 14 Jul 1808; Brevet Lieut. -Col., 8 Oct 1812; Lieut. -Col., 42nd Foot 18 Jun 1815; Brevet Col., 27 May 1825; Maj. -Gen., 10 Jan 1837; Col., 73rd Foot, from 10 Jun 1845; served in Sicily and Italy 1806, wounded at battle of Maida; served in Egypt 1807, wounded at Rosetta; served Peninsular War 1809-14, wounded at Torres Vedras; although wounded at Quatre Bras 16 Jun 1815, he commanded the 42nd Foot at the battle of Waterloo; appointed to command centre division of Madras Army Dec 1838, and acted as temporary Commander-in-Chief at Madras Jan 1841 - Sep 1842; transferred to staff of Bengal Army; commander of third infantry division of army in field against the Sikhs Jan 1846; CB 4 Jun 1814; knighted 21 Sep 1831; KCH 1832; KCB 19 Jul 1838; m. 11 Apr 1818 Elizabeth Anne, dau. of James Macnabb, Arthurstone, Perthshire; d. from a wound received at the battle of Sobraon 10 Feb 1846.
