DOWDESWELL, WILLIAM, son of William Dowdeswell (adm. 1730, qv); b. 27 Feb 1760; adm. 19 Jan 1770; in school lists 1775; adm. Inner Temple year 1779/80; Ensign, 1st Foot Guards 6 May 1780; Lieut. and Capt. 4 May 1785; Capt. and Lieut. -Col. , 8 Feb 1794; Col. (brevet) 25 Jun 1797; Lieut. -Col, 60th Foot 18 Jan 1798; 86th Foot, 24 Feb 1803; Major-Gen. , 25 Sep 1803; Lieut. -Gen. , 25 Jul 1810; Gen. , 19 Jul 1821; MP Tewkesbury 19 Mar 1792 - Nov 1797; served in Netherlands 1793; Governor and Commander-in-Chief, Bahama Islands 1797-1801; went out to Madras 1802 as private secretary to Lord William Cavendish-Bentinck (qv); served in Mahratta War 1804-5; Commander-in-Chief, India 1807, but soon afterwards compelled to return to England on health grounds; retired from active service 1811 on inheriting Pull Court estate; a famous collector of engravings and one of the first to make a speciality of grangerising; FSA 24 Dec 1795; d. unm. 1 Dec 1828.
