FANE, JOHN, 10TH EARL OF WESTMORLAND, elder son of John Fane, 9th Earl of Westmorland (qv), and his first wife; b. 1 Jan 1759; adm. 9 Jul 1770; left Jun 1771; at Charterhouse Sch. Jan 1772 - Dec 1775; succ. father as 10th Earl of Westmorland 26 Apr 1774; Emmanuel Coll. Cambridge, adm. nob. 25 Jan 1776; MA 1778; adm. Middle Temple 12 Feb 1772; while at Cambridge he formed a friendship with William Pitt, which continued through life; joint Postmaster-General 19 Sep 1789 - Jan 1790; Privy Councillor 14 Oct 1789; Lord Lieutenant of Ireland 5 Jan 1790 - Jan 1795, being recalled on account of his opposition to Catholic emancipation; LLD Trinity Coll. Dublin 27 Jan 1790; KG 12 Jun 1793; Master of the Horse 14 Jan 1795- Feb 1798; Lord Privy Seal 1798-1806, 1807-27; DL Northamptonshire 1792, Lord Lieut. from 5 Jul 1828; blind for some years before death; m. 1st, 20 May 1782 Sarah Anne, dau. of Robert Child (qv); m. 2nd, 24 Mar 1800 Jane, second dau. of Richard Huck-Saunders MD FRCP, Physician to St. Thomas’s Hospital; d. 15 Dec 1841.
