D’OYLY, SIR JOHN, BART., son of Matthias D’Oyly (qv); b. 6 Jun 1774; adm. 15 Sep 1787; KS 1788; succeeded Robert Hugh Kennedy (qv) as Capt. of the School 1791; not allowed to present himself for Election 1792 on account of his conduct when Capt. during a sudden “insurrection” of the School, when all the boys, leaving their forms and their masters, went down school to watch a “mill” in Green, and refused to return until it was finished (see Elizabethan vi, 247 and xii, 324, reproducing extracts from the London Post and Public Advertiser); left 1792; Corpus Christ Coll. Cambridge, adm. pens. 27 Jun 1792, matr. Lent 1793; Sir W. Browne’s Medal for Latin Ode 1795, Chancellor’s Second Medal 1796; BA 1796; MA 1799; Fellow of Corpus Christi Coll. 1798-1801; went out to Ceylon 1801; Collector, Colombo 1802; Secretary to Government, Ceylon 1810; the only Singalese scholar in the Ceylon Civil Service; head of intelligence department in Gen. Brownrigg’s campaign against the King of Kandy 1814-5; Resident and First Commissioner, Kandy Provinces; created baronet 29 Aug 1821; d. unm. at Kandy 25 May 1825. DNB.
