Ryle, Herbert Edward; second son of John Charles Ryle (1816–1900), the first Bishop of Liverpool, and his second wife, Jessie Elizabeth Walker; b, 25 May 1856; attended Hill House, Wadhurst, Sussex; adm. Eton College 1868; 1875 won Newcastle scholarship, and proceeded to King's College, Cambridge, as a classical scholar; 1879 Aegrotat degree; April 1881 elected Fellow of King's College, Cambridge; ordained deacon 1882 and priest 1883; Sep. 1886 - Mar. 1888 Principal of St. David's College, Lampeter; taught at the University of Cambridge as Hulsean Professor of Divinity; appointed Honorary Chaplain to Queen Victoria Mar. 1896 and Chaplain-in Ordinary to Her Majesty in Dec. 1898 until he resigned Jan. 1901, Dec. 1900 appointed Bishop of Exeter; 1903 Bishop of Winchester; Dec. 1910 Dean of Westminster; created CVO 1911, KCVO 1921; published The Early Narratives of Genesis (1892), The Canon of the Old Testament (1892), and Philo and Holy Scripture (1895), and other works; m. 15 Aug. 1883, Nea Hewish Adams; d. 20 Aug. 1924, buried in Westminster Abbey.
