Loaned once again to the school on 27th August 2014. A copy of Kneller's portrait which was entered the Hermitage in 1779; acquired from the R. Walpole collection, Houghton Hall, England.

This painting dates from after his disgrace and court-martial but before he changed his name and thus this places it in the 1760's. The portrait was bought by the Elizabethan Club in 1915 and lent to the School in the same year, where it hung in the Scott Library. The identity of the subject has been questioned on account of the star on his coat, since Sackville was not a knight of any British order, but the star may be an afterthought.

On his death in 1837 when the baronetcy became extinct, the picture descended to his granddaughter Francis, who married William Mackworth-Dolben (OW) who died in 1872. Their only daughter bequeathed it to the school in 1912.

After Busby's death, a mask was taken of his face, and from this a drawing was made by Tilson and engraved by White. The drawing is now lost, and this portrait is a copy from that engraving. Presumably originally in the Bulkeley Collection and presented by the Viscount Bulkeley in 1817. The school has a further four pictures of Busby made from the engraving.

Presumably painted for the school. The inscription cannot be much later than 1830, and is probably earlier. This is an early work by Reynolds who started his practice in 1815 in Owen's studio. He presumably got his commission through Owen's friendship with Cyril Jackson, Carey's patron at Christ Church. There is a three-quarter length version by Reynolds at Christ Church, and a smaller replica also in the school's collection.

It was painted in 1799, and Markham's granddaughter, Lady Elizabeth Murray made a copy which was originally at the family home at Bacaa. Portraits of Markham in Hall and Common Room at Christ Church. The school attibutes this painting to John HoppnerIn 'Westminster School. Past and Present', Frederic Forshall writes of a portrait by Reynolds in the Hall at Christ Church and describes it thus ' ... three-quarter length, standing in his episcopal robes'. Forshall goes on to mention ' ... another [ version, sic] in the common room, as Master of Westminster'.

Head Master Rutherford first commissioned a marble bust of Dr. Busby by the sculptor Stirling Lee to commemorate the bicentenary of Busby's death in 1895 (see the Governing Body Minutes, 1894, p. 312). The whereabouts of this bust is not known. A second bust of Busby was presented to the school in 1945 by Benjamin C Boulter (OW), who found it in a shop in Cheltenham. This was a copy of the Rysbrack original at Christ Church, which in turn was based upon the fine effigy of Busby by Fr. Bird in the Abbey. This gift was stolen in 1980 and replaced with the present bust, a copy from the Christ Church bust.

After BusbyExtract from The Elizabethan (1966):"Despite the number of portraits of him in the possession of the School, none is original: they are all taken from an engraving of a lost drawing by Henry Tilson, who committed suicide soon after drawing Busby's corpse. Much of Busby's reputation for severity seems to have permeated his even these copies, for the small head which hangs in Busby's and the half-length portrait in No. 17 show him with almost unbelievably harsh and unsympathetic features, surmounted inevitably by the scull-cap, which certainly does nothing to alleviate the impression of total austerity. In the large version, however, a moderately distinguished painting illustrated in Sargeaunt's "Annals of Westminster School", the artist seems to have felt less animosity towards him, and the famous Head Master looks down almost leniently from his frame. Only two busts of Busby are prominently displayed in the school; and these, a copy by Lee in the Busby Library and a plaster cast in the Art Room, naturally enough give a somewhat hard impression of him."

As regards the sitter, we can disregard later generations of the family at the time on grounds of style, and the hat shows that he was a Town Boy, which suggests that the sitter is most likely to have been Joseph Phillimore (1750-1831) or William Phillimore (1748-1818). Genealogy of the Family of Phillimore (1922) makes reference to a 'portrait in oils of William Phillimore' at Kendalls estate (p. 209) which might be a reference to this painting.

Dyed, painted silk, on a hessian backing. On the left the arms of the Commonwealth: the crosses of St. George and St. Andrew and the Irish harp and in escutcheon a lion rampant guardant for Cromwell. On the right are the quarterings of his wife. Inscribed verso with: 'this ensign was snatched from the bier of the tyrant Oliver Cromwell, when his waxen effigy, adorned with royal state, was being magnificently displayed in the Church of St. Peter, Westminster'.

Robert Uvedale wrote in 1792 that his grandfather of the same name had witnessed the state burial of Oliver Cromwell and removed this skutcheon. The Westminster boys had been forced to watch the funeral and Uvedale jumped forward and snatched the satin banner known as the 'Majesty Skutcheon'. It was returned to the school by his descendent Mary West in 1963.Extract from The Elizabethan (1966):"Painted on satin and surmounted by the crown which had been appropriated for him is Cromwell's Coat of arms. The Skutcheon was originally attached to the Protector's bier, but was removed during the funeral procession by an enterprising, Royalist Westminster, Robert Uvedale, who, the theft accomplished, darted back into a crowd of his schoolfellows and thus escaped detection. The Skutcheon remained with in the possession of his family until it was presented through the Head Master by Miss Mary West in 1963."

Abbot almost certainly sat for Gibson, as he undertook an extensive tour of France and Italy (1819-22). The bust passed to his son, the Second Baron (d.1867) and then to his grandson, the Third and last Baron, who died childless in 1912. His wife, Lady Isabel Maude left it to her nieces, Lady Eveline Maude and Lady Clementine Isabel Tottenham, who presented it to the School in March 1928.

To celebrate the accession of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the school commissioned a bust of our foundress, Queen Elizabeth I, the quatercentenary of whose death was commemorated in March 2003. The sculpture was installed in time for the School's Commemoration in Abbey in November 2002. The bronze, by Malcolm Stathers, was placed on a plinth of Portland stone put in place by the Abbey stonemasons under the portico executed, it is now known, to a design of Robert Hooke's (OW) in 1681-2.

Pelham sits on the left to the front of the composition. He is depicted with dark blue-grey eyes and heavy eyebrows nearly concealing a wart above his right eye. His long grey wig falling in front of his left shoulder and behind his right. He wears his chancellor's gown with gold lace over black coat, with a flocked details, lace cravat and wrist ruffles. Pelham is seated in a plain red chair, draped curtain behind, a letter without writing in his left hand. On the right sits John Roberts, with dark blue-grey eyes and dark brows. He is positioned behind a table draped with a green cloth. Roberts wears a red coat with the top button fastened and lace cuffs; he holds a quill to a page and further papers topped by an inkstand holding a second quill can be seen on the extreme right. Behind Roberts is an archway with sky and trees visible beyond. The composition is lit from the top left.

The Unknown Warrior was chosen for Westminster Abbey in 1920, from four unknown warriors who fought for Britain during the First World War, and who died in four different battle areas. In the summer of 2017 the artist spent time in the four locations (the Aisne, the Somme, Arras and Ypres), making studies of the landscapes as they are now. This oil painting is one of a series of four stemming from these visits. This painting has been made across four separate canvases, one for each unknown warrior and each canvas is the same size as a Commonwealth War Grave (2 ft 6 in. in height and 1 ft 3 in. in width).

The Arras paintings stem mostly from the landscapes around Vimy Ridge. The remarkable monument on top of the ridge, designed by Walter Seymour Allward, can be seen on the horizon behind the paintings. Most of the studies made in Arras depicted trees, but despite repeated attempts to include them in this painting they had to be removed. The focus of the image, instead, is the ridge itself, drawn from this spot very hurriedly.Initial work in this location was done when the field had just been ploughed and was devoid of crops - rather different from when the finished paintings returned to the site.
