Historia biográfica
Elias Hicks (1748-1830), born in Hempstead, New York to John Hicks and Martha Hicks (neé Smith) was a member of a Quaker 'Society of Friends' in Philadelphia which split in 1820. A travelling liberal Quaker preacher, he is perhaps best known as a slavery abolitionist. Founder of the 'Charity Society of Jerico and Westbury Meetings in 1794' Wrote 'Observations on the Slavery of Africans and Their Descendents' in 1811. He had 11 children with his wife Jemima Hicks (neé Seaman).

An affectionate letter in which Hicks illustrates the necessity of meeting each other 'in spirit'. He expresses joy at his family's welfare and comments on his own health. It suggests that he was away for work.
