        Gielgud, Sir (Arthur) John, son of Frank Gielgud, stockbroker, and Kate Terry, d. of Arthur James Lewis; b. 14 Apr. 1904; adm. Sept. 1917 (G), non-res. KS Sept. 1918; left July 1921; an actor; a continuous succession of outstanding performances and productions or stage, screen and TV in this country and in North America since his first appearance at the Old Vic on 7 Nov. 1921; also tours of Australasia 1963-4, Gothenburg, Copenhagen, Warsaw, Helsinki, Moscow and Dublin 1964; has taken leading parts in plays by Shakespeare, Wilde, Congreve, Chekhov, Sheridan, Bond, Pinter and Storey; Kt 1953; Legion d'Honneur 1960; CH 1977; Pres.
