Champion, Edward C., fl.1870-1883Depicted full length, facing left; he sits upon a brown horse; he wears dark armour. To the right are a clump of trees, to the left a flat landscape.
The portrait (of which very few engravings exist) shows him standing with his head thrust forward belligerently and holding in one hand the strap with which he used to belabour junior boys who interrupted him in his work. It was a time-honoured joke to send unsuspecting new boys to provoke his wrath, and in his other hand is a piece of paper on which can just be discerned the words: Please give the bearer two measures of strap-oil.
