J.E.Miller in Venice to PE in Naples. Certainly not here for the carnival, which he hates, but to repair the omissions of a hurried first visit and to hear the music in the great theatre. Plans for future travels in northern Italy - Mantua not worth seeing. Will return soon to England because of aging father. Regrets the death (in Naples od malaria?) of Ashbridge, whom he had known 6 months previously in Naples (but didn't warm to). Doubts that PE's current employment will be profitable, either financially or academically.
Philip Bliss finds a housekeeper for PE (see Row 76) and also a housemaid, and asks PE to name the highest sum he is prepared to pay. Postscripted note - 'You MUST be prudent.'
J.Bull - the Dean wishes to speak to PE on the subject of the Camden Professorship (of Ancient History) - JB has not said that he had already discussed it with PE, or that the position was acceptable to PE.
Aulus Gellius [Sir William Gell] to PE at the Albergo della Speranzella (possibly in Naples?) re the publication of some papyri, to be dedicated to the King (if the King should disappear, the name can be changed from George to Frederick, George III's 2nd son. No date, but an oblique reference to the dropping of the Pains and Penalties Bill puts it between Nov 1820 and Aug 1821 (death of Queen Caroline). See Horsfall p476f & notes ad loc - perhaps the letter should be dated to late 1820, just after PE's departure from Italy.
Goodenough (Westminster HM 1819-1828) begs PE not to do any work on the 'Choruses,' unless he has something already worked out, but to concentrate on the proposed sermon. Robert Cockerell has 'reserved his stomach for the venison at Mr Bigge's (John Bigge OW, a near contemporary of Cockerell?). Mentions a Theban based play at the Theatre, Tottenham Street.
G W Hall (Canon of Gloucester, Master of Pembroke?) has disposed of the 5 poll books already sent, and requests the remaining dozen or so if they are printed. Regards to (Frodsham) Hodson, Principal of BNC.
Copy of letter from PE to William Gifford (ed. CEQR) requesting that this letter be forwarded to the author of a review accusing him of plagiarism. He thinks it is Dobree, claims that the emendations occurred to him before he heard them from Porson and wishes to know precisely which emendations are in question. This letter precedes those in Rows 142f - v Horsfall pp456f.
