Letter from Isabel Sykes, 6th October 1955. On Robert Blake's biography of her father Bonar Law - she was sent an early part, but made so many criticisms that she was not sent any more. Hopes the weather will be good for the CWs' break in Dolgellau.
Letter from Isabel Sykes, 20th November 1953? Glad that the fly killer is a success. (Her husband is still alive, so this letter must be 1953 or earlier - see previous letters from Sykes).
Letter from Isobel to Harold Costley White, Addressed 'Darling Daddy' and Signed 'Tink'. Staying at Cirencester Park. Would love to have lessons to make her voice more respectable (unclear whether this is singing or speaking). Had a grand dance, and hunted from the inside of a 1912 Daimler. Cyril (her brother) seemed alright when she left, but the stitches have not been taken out. Outside there is a yew hedge 32 feet high (the tallest yew hedge in Britain).
Letter from Ivor Thomas (1905-1993), MP and writer.
Letter from J B Pulay. The figure of the Risen Christ has now been cast; thanks JPW for making it possible; satisfied that it will be placed with the Mirfield Fathers
Letter from J Outram Smith, 24th December 1949. On the possible destination for a collection of books (mainly theological, but including some 18th Century novelists and playwrights) - Church House Gloucester.
Letter from Jack Goodliffe, 16th December 1953. Good wishes for retirement - Harold Costley White's greatest gifts to the church came in the later years, 'when so often there is disillusionment and failure of powers.' When he first came the Cathedral was majestic, but cold and unwelcoming - that has all changed. (A pencilled note puts this letter in 1953, but given the content 1952 seems preferable.)
Letter from James Purdon Lewes Thomas (1903-1960), MP, deputy chairman of the Conservative Party. Requests a reference for Henry Frederic Lawrence Turner (1908-1977), anxious to become a Conservative MP.
