Letter from Wilfred Synge, 11th January 1949. OW and publisher. Has seen Harold Costley White's article in The Sunday Times on the recolouring of mediaeval monuments (see 117). A vague idea for a monograph on the subject, but wonders if there have been any recent publications on the subject, and whether the work is restricted to the monuments in Gloucester.
Letter from W.I. Croome, 31st January 1946. Harold Costley White has apparently suggested that the chancel screen from Painswick could be placed outside the Cathedral. Bledington Church near Stow is a lovely little building.
Letter from W.I. Croome, 24th January 1946. Hon. Sec. of the Advisory Committee on Faculties and Protection of Churches. Parish of Painswick has dismantled and decided not to replace an elaborate iron chancel screen with gates (modern German work). Wonders if a place could be found for it in the Cathedral, perhaps in the Crypt.
Letter from W.I. Croome, 16th September 1946. On disagreements about the chancel screen in Lydney church - retention, removal or replacement (as far as I can see it remains unaltered since 1946). Has just holidayed in Devon - saw 37 churches, and loved the flooring of granite slabs and the use of slate for inscribed tablets.
Letter from W.I. Croome to Bishop of Gloucester, 10th May 1946. Stephen Dykes-Bower (architect, and subsequently Surveyor of the Fabric at Westminster Abbey), deeply interested in Gloucester Cathedral, is prepared to write a note on the historic and artistic importance of the Deanery in order to attract funds for its restoration...but might assume that he would be granted the work in return, whereas the work will almost certainly go to Colonel Waller, Supervisor of the Cathedral Works.
Letter from Wellington & Clifford, 27th July 1951. Solicitors. Setting up a preliminary discussion of some of the financial problems facing the Chapter.
Letter from War Agricultural Exec Comm, 6th August 1946. On the use and redecoration of 12 College Green by the Ministry of Works.
