Asks the CWs to spend the night on both occasions. Has just returned from a party at St James's Palace given by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings - shook hands with the Queen Mother.

He opposed compromise and stuck out for high standards, especially in musical, aesthetic and intellectual matters. Had been meaning to send an invitation to the enthronement, but has heard that the CWs do not want to come (age and weather?); the new bishop is 'an understanding man but not a leader of thought.'

(Possibly Arthur Headlam, former Bishop of Gloucester - this would explain why the Chapter sent a wreath, and date the letter to January 1947.)
