June 6, 1915; served with the Royal Naval Division in Gallipoli and France; served in the Ministry of Food 1915-20, and in the Treasury 1920-3; adm. to the Middle Temple Nov. 20, 1918; director, Ernest Benn Ltd., 1923-8; director, Eyre and Spottiswoode (Publishers) Ltd., 1929-45; chairman 1945-59; editor of the English Review 1930-6 and of the New English Review 1946-50; author of The Royal Naval Division: The War on Land, 1914-8 (1923) and many other works including two novels; m. 1919, Eleanor, daughter of Henry Arnold; d. 1964.
