Letters and notes

J Allen from Pisa to PE in Naples re forwarding a box of PE's books to England. Death of a friend and burial at Leghorn (Livorno). Warm climates do not cure - his sister's two children getting weaker, despite opium. Sismondi has reportedly married a Miss White, but he never mentions her in letters, which is suspicious (he in fact married Jessie Allen 2 years later - see above from Jessie de Sismondi)

Letters and notes

Thomas Grenville (brother of Lord Grenville? - row 49) making enquiries for some friends, who for the moment do not wish to proceed. The friends must be nameless, and the enquiry a secret.

Bundle 1

J.A.Cramer (OW, vice principal St Alban Hall) to PE in Croydon, complaining of the disorderly and bestial habits of an undergraduate.

Bundle 1

Thomas Burgess encloses a paper, and seems to ask Oxford to contribute to the foundation of St David's College at Lampeter, in the same way that Cambridge has done.

Bundle 1

J. Kidd has heard that Alban Hall is vacant and that PE is a candidate for the Camden professorship. A besom is needed to sweep out the unclean birds which infest that place!

Bundle 1

J. Kidd - perhaps, if PE takes over Alban Hall, he will be ineligible for the professorship, since his predecessor was also of Alban Hall. There is no rival candidate for the professorship, so otherwise it is a certainty - therefore delay taking over the Hall till after the election.

Bundle 1

W. Turner seeks advice re his quest for a job in the church (and sends his regards to Thomas Gaisford, Regius Professor of Greek)
