        PAGET, HON. SIR EDWARD, brother of Henry William Paget, 1st Marquis of Anglesey (qv); b. 3 Nov 1775; at school 1791; left Easter 1792; while at school he received such a thrashing from one of the bigger boys that it was for some time doubtful whether he would recover from the injuries inflicted upon him, but he would never reveal the identity of his assailant (The Paget Papers, 1896, vi-vii); Cornet and Sub-Lieut., 1st Life Guards 23 Mar 1792; Capt., 54th Foot 1 Dec 1792; Maj., 14 Nov 1793; Lieut. -Col., 28th Foot 30 Apr 1794; Brevet Col. and ADC to King 1 Jan 1798; Brig. -Gen. (in Ireland) Oct 1803; Major-Gen., 1 Jan 1805; Col., 80th Foot 23 Feb 1808 – Dec 1815; Lieut. -Gen., 4 Jun 1811; Col., 28th Foot, from 26 Dec 1815; Gen., 27 May 1825; served in Flanders and Netherlands, at capture of Minorca, and in Egypt, where he was wounded 21 Mar 1801; commanded the reserve at Corunna 16 Jan 1809; conducted advance from Coimbra, and lost right arm in action before Oporto 12 May 1809; second-in-command to Wellington in Peninsular campaign 1811, but was taken prisoner a few months after his appointment while reconnoitring alone near Burgos, and so lost the rest of the campaign; Governor of Ceylon 1820-2; Commander-in-Chief, India 1822-5; responsible for conduct of campaign in Burma 1824; Governor, RMC Sandhurst 25 Mar 1829; Governor of Chelsea Hospital from 1837; MP Caernarvon 1796-1806, Milborne Port 5 Dec 1810-20; a Groom of the Bedchamber to George IV as Prince Regent and King 6 Jun 1816 – Oct 1821; KB 12 Jun 1812; GCB 2 Jan 1815; m. 1st, 22 May 1805 Hon. Frances Bagot, fourth dau. of William Bagot, 1st Baron Bagot (qv); m. 2nd, 22 Feb 1815 Lady Harriet Legge, fourth dau. of George Legge, 3rd Earl of Dartmouth; d. 13 May 1849. DNB.
