        PAGET, LORD CLARENCE EDWARD, eldest son of Henry William Paget, 2nd Marquis of Anglesey (qv), and his second wife; b. 17 Jun 1811; adm. 22 Jun 1821 (G); one of the Royal pages at the Coronation of George IV 19 Jul 1821; left Whitsun 1823; entered Royal Navy as ship boy on HMS Naiad 29 May 1823; Lieut., 14 May 1831; Cdr., 25 Sep 1834; Post Capt., 26 Mar 1839; Rear-Adm., 11 Feb 1858; Vice-Adm., 24 Apr 1865; Adm., 1 Apr 1870; served at battle of Navarino 1827 and in the Baltic and Black Sea 1854-6; Commander-in-Chief, Mediterranean 1866-9; retired list 1876; MP (Whig/Liberal) Sandwich 1847-52, 1857- May 1866; Secretary to the Admiralty 1859-66; Privy Councillor 6 May 1866; KCB 2 Jun 1869; GCB 29 May 1886; JP Anglesey 1858, also DL Anglesey; in his Autobiography and Journals, ed. Otway, 1896, 3-7, Lord Clarence relates his experiences as a fag at the School and gives an account of the “Shoes and Candlesticks” rebellion; m. 7 Apr 1852 Martha Stuart, youngest dau. of Adm.
