PELHAM, THOMAS, 1st EARL OF CHICHESTER, only surviving son of Thomas Pelham MP, Stanmer, Sussex, previously a merchant at Constantinople, and Annetta, dau. of Thomas Bridges, Constantinople; b. 28 Feb 1727/8; adm. Jun 1740 (Bourne's); carved his name on the Coronation Chair in the Abbey; Clare Hall, Cambridge, adm. fellow commoner 24 May 1745; Grand Tour (Italy) 1749-50; MP Rye 13 Dec 1749-54, Sussex 1754 – 17 Nov 1768; a Commissioner of Trade 6 Apr 1754 – Mar 1761; a Lord of the Admiralty 21 Mar 1761 – Dec 1762; Comptroller of the Household 17 Jul 1765 – Mar 1774; Privy Councillor 6 Sep 1765; succ. cousin Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle (qv), as 2nd Baron Pelham of Stanmer 17 Nov 1768; Chief Justice in Eyre, North of Trent 15 Mar 1774 – 27 Nov 1775; Master of the Great Wardrobe 10 Nov 1775 – 11 Jul 1782 (post abolished); Surveyor-Gen. of Customs, London, from 1773; created Earl of Chichester 23 Jun 1801; m. 11 Jun 1754 Anne, dau. of Frederick Meinhardt Frankland MP, Commissioner of Excise; d. 8 Jan 1805.
