              Cornelius Dion “Sully” O’Sullivan was born at San Francisco, California on the 27th of April 1919 the elder son of Colonel Curtis Dion O’Sullivan OW, United States Army, later Adjutant General of the State of California, and Helen (nee Hooper) O’Sullivan of 2717, Hearst Avenue, San Francisco. He was educated at Westminster School where he was up Ashburnham from May to July 1935. He was admitted to US Naval Academy as a Midshipman Second Class on the 17th of June 1938.
              He attended the University of California, Berkeley on a Lexington Scholarship in the Class of 1942, where he rowed for the University and was later appointed as Captain of Rowing. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and was a member of the orchestra.
              His class had been due to graduate in February 1942 but instead graduated on the 19th of December 1941, due to the United States declaration of war on Japan on the 7th of December. He was promoted to Midshipman First Class in 1941and to Ensign on the 19th of December 1941. He was posted to the coastal and harbour defence submarine R-20 on the 31st of May 1942.
              He was married at the United States Naval Academy Chapel, Annapolis on the 19th of May 1942 to Kathryn (nee Black) of San Francisco.
              He was later promoted to Lieutenant, Junior Grade and was posted to the submarine USS Triton as 2nd Navigator.
              The USS Triton (SS-201), under the command of Lieutenant Commander George Kenneth Mackenzie Jr. USN, set sail from Brisbane, Australia on the 16th of February 1943 for what was to be her sixth patrol. She was to operate against enemy shipping in the area between Rabaul, the Shortlands Basin.
              On the 6th of March the USS Triton attacked a Japanese convoy consisting of five merchant vessels escorted by a destroyer. During the attack she sank the cargo ship Kiriha Maru and damaged one other ship. Two nights later she attacked another enemy convoy and claimed that five of the eight torpedoes she had fired scored hits. She was unable to confirm this due to gunfire from the escorting destroyers which forced her to submerge.
              On the 11th of March the USS Triton reported that she was stalking two convoys, each made up of five or more ships. She contacted the submarine USS Trigger (SS-237) which was operating in an adjacent area. She was ordered to remain to the south of the equator and to continue her pursuit. Two days later she received a warning from her base that three enemy destroyers were in the area and that they were either looking for convoys to attack or were hunting American submarines.
              On the 15th of March 1943, USS Triton was off the Admiralty Islands to the north of New Guinea when she reported that she had attacked an enemy convoy and that she was under a depth charge attack by three Japanese destroyers. Nothing further was heard from the submarine, but post war Japanese records indicate that they had sunk a submarine that day in an area slightly to the north west of the USS Triton’s last reported position. One of the Japanese crews reported observing an oil slick, debris and items carrying American markings. The entire crew was lost in the attack. USS Trigger had also attacked the convoy and came under depth charge attack which eventually stopped. They reported afterwards that they heard continued depth charging some distance away which lasted about an hour.
              The University of California wrote of him: - “Sully began college life at the University of California and has had little trouble standing at the top of the class. Sully climaxed four years of crew by becoming the Academy's No. 1 oarsman and captain. His unruly hair has been a problem, but he manages to divert attention with his contagious smile.”
              He is commemorated on the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery.

              Plaistowe, Ralph Cuthbert, 1911-1941

              Ralph Cuthbert Plaistowe was born at Ealing, Middlesex on the 6th of December 1911 the elder son of Cuthbert Plaistowe, managing director of a fruit preserve and confectionary manufacturer, and Christine Lilian (nee Callard) Plaistowe of “Mansfield”, Elgin Road, Weybridge in Surrey. He was educated at Westminster School where he was up Homeboarders from September 1925 to July 1930. He matriculated for Queens’ College, Cambridge in 1930 where he graduated with a BA in 1933. He went to work as a chartered accountant and qualified ACA in 1937. He practiced in London and at Leamington Spa. He was awarded a Royal Aero Club Certificate (No. 16362) at Brooklands Flying Club on the 1st of October 1938 while flying a Tiger Moth aircraft. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve where he trained as a pilot and rose to the rank of Flight Sergeant.
              On the 1st of September 1941 Bomber Command dispatched 34 Wellingtons and 20 Hampdens for an operation on Cologne. The weather was clear and returning crews reported that they saw a number of fires on the ground but many of these were German decoy fires. The German authorities reported that one house was damaged in the city and that there were no casualties on the ground.
              Ralph Plaistowe and his crew took off from RAF Scampton at 8.13pm on the 1st of September 1941 in Hampden Mk I AE187 OL-L for the operation. They crossed the English coast at Orfordness. The aircraft was shot down by an enemy night fighter flown by Oberleutnant Wilhem “Willi” Dimter of 3./NJG1 and crashed at Deurne, Noord Brabant, 9 kilometres to the east south east of Helmond in Holland at 11.47pm with the loss of the entire crew. Theirs was the fourth victory of an eventual eight victories for Willi Dimter before he was killed in action on the 7th of September 1942.

              Theirs was the only aircraft which failed to return from the raid.
              The crew was buried at the Military Cemetery, Eindhoven on the 2nd of September 1941. Their bodies were exhumed for identification purposes and were reburied on the 23rd of April 1947.
              He is commemorated on the war memorial at Queens’ College, Cambridge and on the 1939-1945 Roll of Honour of Members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and Articled Clerks.
              He is buried at Woensel General Cemetery, Eindhoven Plot JJ, Grave 35.

              Charles William Anderson Scott was born on the 13th of February 1903 the son of Charles Kennedy Scott, founder and conductor of the Philharmonic Choir, and Mary (nee Donaldson) Scott of Glasgow. He was educated at Westminster School where he was up Ashburnham from the 21st of September 1916 to July 1919. On leaving school he worked on a sugar plantation in British Guiana for a short time but returned to enlist in the Royal Air Force.
              He was granted a short service commission as a Pilot Officer on probation in the Royal Air Force on the 9th of December 1922. He was posted to No. 2 Flying Training School based at RAF Duxford for pilot training where he made his first solo flight in an Avro 504. He was confirmed in his rank on the 9th of June 1923 and was awarded his Wings on the 15th of December 1923. He was posted to 32 Squadron based at RAF Kenley and was promoted to Flying Officer on the 9th of July 1924. On the 1st of November 1924 he was posted to the Armament and Gunnery School at Eastchurch but this appointment was cancelled a short time later and he returned to 32 Squadron. He boxed for the Royal Air Force in the Inter Services team Championships of 1923, 1924 and 1925. He was the Royal Air Force heavyweight boxing champion in 1923 and 1924. He transferred to the Royal Air Force Reserve of Officers on the 9th of December 1926 and relinquished his commission on completion of his service on the 9th of December 1930.
              In 1927, he emigrated to Australia where he flew for the airline Qantas. On the 4th of September 1928 he took off in bad weather from Parafield Airfield in de Havilland 50 G-AUHI “Hermes”. He was flying in cloud at 1,800 feet some six miles to the north east of the airfield when the aircraft entered a spin, crashed and caught fire. He escaped from the burning aircraft and pulled his injured flight engineer, George Nutson, clear of the wreckage. Nutson died from his injuries in hospital later in the day. A court of inquiry concluded that Charles Scott had made a serious error of judgement by taking off in such poor weather. He returned to flying duties with the airline at the end of January 1929.
              He was married at Scots’ Church, Melbourne on the 26th of April 1929 to Kathleen (nee O’Neill) and they had a daughter Rosemary Barbara born on the 9th of February 1930. He broke the solo record for a flight between Brisbane and Melbourne in a de Havilland DH 60 Gypsy Moth in order to be present at the birth of his daughter. The couple returned to England where they lived at “Belle Vista”, St Peters Road, West Mersea in Essex.
              In 1931, he established a new record for a solo flight between England and Australia while flying in a de Havilland DH 60 Gypsy Moth. For this feat he was awarded the Air Force Cross: - “In recognition of the distinguished services rendered to aviation by his recent flights between England and Australia”, which was announced by the Air Ministry on the 30th of June 1931. He broke his own record for the flight in the following year.
              In 1934 he and Tom Campbell Black were selected to compete in the MacRobertson London to Melbourne Air Race where he flew in one of three purpose built de Havilland DH 88 Comets. He and Black set a new record for a flight from England to Australia of 52 hours and 33 minutes, smashing the old record by more than 100 hours and they arrived at Melbourne in a time of 71 hours. He was awarded the British Gold Medal of the Royal Aeronautical Society for winning the race.
              His wife filed for divorce on the 21st of January 1935 on the grounds of his adultery with Greta Bremner which had allegedly taken place on more than one occasion at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane from the 14th of December 1934. She was granted a Decree Nisi on the 19th of December 1935.
              He was remarried at Caxton hall, Westminster on the 17th of September 1936 to Greta Constance (nee Bremner); she was granted a divorce on the 8th of October 1940.
              In September 1936, he entered the Schlesinger Air Race from England to South Africa. He and Charles Guthrie took off from Portsmouth in Vega Gull G-AEKE and landed at Rand Airport, Johannesburg on the 1st of October in a time of 52 hours, 56 minutes and 48 seconds, winning the first prize of £10,000. They were the only aircraft to complete the race from the fourteen aircraft which started it.
              On the outbreak of war he approached the Royal Air Force to offer his services but was offered the rank of Pilot Officer and the opportunity to fly as a ferry pilot which he was insulted by and so withdrew his offer. Instead he worked as an ambulance drive with the Air Raid Precautions Service and later served for a time with the Royal Navy before joining the Atlantic Ferry Service as a pilot. After making seven Trans Atlantic ferry crossings he was forced to stop due to his failing health. He was appointed as the operations manager of No. 10 Observer School, Royal Canadian Air Force based at Chatham, New Brunswick.
              He was remarried once again in Montreal on the 28th of August 1941 to Kathleen Barnesley (nee Pritchard).
              In May 1942 he was badly injured in the crash landing of an aircraft while he was taking an injured student to hospital, after which he was no longer fit to fly. Following his recovery he went to work for De Havilland in Toronto but after five months he left to join Fairchild Aircraft as an inspector of aircraft at their Montreal factory; he also lectured to Sea Cadets. He suffered a nervous breakdown in early 1944 and returned to Fairchild on his recovery.
              He returned to England after the end of the war in Europe and joined the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration in November 1945, serving at their Headquarters in Germany. While he was there he took his own life by shooting himself in the chest with his service revolver.
              His death is not recorded by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission as he was not serving in the military at the time of his death.
              He is buried at Mengeringhausen.

              John Robert Antony Stickland was born at Fulham, London on the 17th of June 1921 the only son of George Cuthbert Stickland, Egyptian Education Service, and Kathleen Mary (nee Fossick) Stickland of “Sydenham”, Lewdown in Devon. He was educated at Westminster School where he was up Homeboarders from September 1934 to July 1939. He was a member of the Photographic Society and was elected as Secretary of the Natural History Society in 1938.
              On leaving school he entered the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve as a Special Entry Cadet on the 1st of September 1939 and was appointed as a Midshipman on the 31st of October 1940. He was commissioned as a Sub Lieutenant in June 1942 and was promoted to Lieutenant in December 1943. He was posted to the frigate HMS Gould (K476).
              On the 29th of February 1944, HMS Gould, under the command of Lieutenant Daniel William Ungoed RN, was on convoy escort duty when she was one of four frigates which located the U Boat U-358, under the command of Kapitänleutnant Rolf Manke, when some 450 miles to the north, north east of the Azores. In a series of attacks on the U Boat, which lasted throughout the night, the four ships dropped a total of 104 depth charges. The next day two of the frigates left for Gibraltar leaving HMS Gould and the frigate HMS Affleck (K362) to continue the pursuit of the enemy submarine. After 38 hours underwater and having been under continuous depth charge attacks, U-358 was forced to the surface at 7.20pm where she managed to fire a G7e “Gnat” torpedo from her rear tube which struck HMS Gould in the aft motor room at 7.21pm. The explosion broke her in two, with the stern section sinking very quickly. The forward section capsized and sank twenty five minutes later following a heavy list to starboard. Seven officers and one hundred and sixteen ratings were killed in the attack.
              HMS Affleck closed with the U Boat at full speed and with all guns firing, scoring hits on the conning tower and on the hull of the enemy submarine. She then attacked with depth charges at close range and, after an explosion which broke the back of the U Boat, it sank at 7.39pm with only one survivor from its crew being picked up and taken prisoner. The frigate then rescued three officers and thirty two ratings from HMS Gould before taking them to Gibraltar. One rating died from his wounds during the journey and was buried at sea the following day.
              His parents received the following telegram: - “From Admiralty. Deeply regret to inform you that your son Lieutenant J.R.A. Stickland RNVR has been reported missing presumed killed on active service. Letter follows shortly.”
              He is commemorated on the war memorial at Lewdown.

Coll. Dart­mouth Sept. 1924, and subsequently at Harrow; Pilot Officer (General Duties) R.A.F.V.R. July 19, 1938; transferred to A. and S.D.; Flying Officer Jan. 19, 1940; temp. Flight-Lieut.; killed on active service July 1941.

              Graham Templer “Swanny” Swann was born at Southborough, Kent on the 29th of June 1902 the son of the Reverend Arthur Henry Swann, Vicar of Christ Church, Hampstead, and Agnes Jane (nee Graham) Swann of 45, High Street, Harrow-on-the-Hill in Middlesex. He was educated at Westminster School where he was up Grant’s from the 21st of September 1916 to July 1921. He was appointed as a Monitor in 1920. He was a member of the 1st Cricket XI in 1921 when the Elizabethan wrote the following on his season: - “Not a polished batsman: should have confined himself to hitting simply and solely. Could bowl at a pinch; chiefly distinguished himself by energetic and, at times, brilliant out fielding.” He was awarded his School Cricket Colours in 1921. He was a member of the 2nd Football XI in 1919 and of the 1st Football XI from 1919 to 1921 where he played at inside right. The Elizabethan wrote the following on his 1920/21 season: - “Looks a good player, but never seems to do the right thing, largely due to over anxiousness. Must be more calm and collected, and must use his intelligence more for spotting openings. Has a fine burst of speed, a most useful asset.” He was awarded School Colours for Football in 1921. He was a member of the Officer Training Corps and was promoted to Lance Corporal in September 1920.
              He matriculated for Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1921 and was awarded a BA in Modern and Medieval Languages in 1924. He was the first civilian member of Toc H. On leaving university he was appointed as an assistant modern languages master at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth and later at Harrow School. While at Harrow he accompanied boys from the Air Training Section of the Officer Training Corps to a RAF Camp.
              He was awarded a Royal Aero Club Certificate (No. 10655) at Haldon Aerodrome on the 23rd of July 1932 while flying a Gypsy Moth aircraft.
              He was commissioned as a Pilot Officer on probation in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve on the 19th of July 1938 and was moblisied on the outbreak of war. He was promoted to Flying Officer on the 19th of January 1940 and by June 1941 he was billeted at “Sand Green”, Crossfield Avenue, Porthcawl in Glamorganshire.
              Graham Swann took off from RAF Stormy Down in Battle Mk I L5001, with his pilot, Pilot Officer Eric Geoffrey Kitching, for a co-operation exercise with a local Home Guard unit which was to take place at Margam Castle, Port Talbot. At the time, he had accumulated 840 hours of total solo flying time of which 698 were on Battle aircraft. As the aircraft was making a low level turn the pilot misjudged his height and the aircraft struck a 45 foot tree and crashed 200 yards further on in a field at Eglwysnunydd Farm on the Margam estate at 10.25am where it burst into flames on impact, killing both men. The wreckage was in three large pieces which were spread over an area of 60 yards. The bodies of the two men were taken to the mortuary at RAF Stormy Down.
              His brother-in-law, the Reverend G.V. Hart, received the following telegram dated the 23rd of June 1941: -“Deeply regret to inform you that your brother in law Flight Lieutenant Graham Templar Swann is reported to have lost his life as the result of an aircraft accident on June 22nd 1941. The Air Council express their profound sympathy. His mother had been informed.”
              His funeral took place on the 27th of June 1941.
              The Harrow School magazine, the Harrovian wrote: - “Of the many hundreds of boys who have passed through Harrow while Swanny was on the staff, there must be very few who cannot claim to have been his friends. To be in his French or German Division was often but the prelude to such a friendship and a good prelude it was. His intimate resource in keeping the subjects alive was the envy of all his Modern Languages colleagues. In many spheres of activity outside the form room he played a prominent part. He was a tireless Rugger coach – self-taught – be it added. It is typical of his enterprise, for he came from a soccer school and played his first Rugger games as a Dartmouth master. If he was missed on the cricket field, it was because he was indispensible for the Sailng Club. He shared willingly his exceptionally wide and varied interests. One would find groups of boys in his study at all hours of the day, listening to Bach or Beethoven on his gramophone, enjoying his inexhaustible fund of photographs or his War Museum. This last, by the way, was but one of his many hobbies, and one had to see him at work to realise what hobbies could mean. He took greatest pride of all in the creation of the model railway club, which, even since he left Harrow to join up, has had perhaps the largest following of any school club. If the above record fails to picture him as more than an attractive Mr. Chips, a glance at his other activities will soon dispel the illusion. A great traveller, he visited during his holidays every corner of the earth. Titles of lectures to the school and on the wireless, “£17 to India”, “With £10 across America” etc., bear witness to his venturesome spirit, which was indeed one of his most attractive facets. “The harder of two alternatives” was his guiding principle, and he had the courage to carry it through. With his colleagues he was universally popular. It was not everyone who agreed with his opinions, for his conclusions, inflexible as they were, he formed after long and deliberate thinking. But no one could fail to enjoy his quick wit and genial humour, and he was the kindest of friends. It was the spirit of adventure that led him to take up flying. After much useful work with the Air Training Section of the School O.T.C., he joined the R.A.F.V.R. shortly before the outbreak of war, and was called up when hostilities began. But he spent much of his leave at Harrow and kept many of his friendships alive; and those boys who were privileged to be his guests during A.T.C. camps at the R.A.F. station to which he was attached, will long treasure the memory of that fearless pilot who worked unstintingly on their behalf, sparing no pains to make their visit a happy one. Seldom has the war been brought more vividly to Harrow as a whole than by the news of Swanny’s death.”
              The Elizabethan wrote: - “His deep sympathy and insight into the character of his pupils, his sense of humour and the high standards he set himself and others evoked the respect and affection of all among whom he worked. He was fond of adventure and a great traveller, and is said to have completed a tour of 11,000 miles in one summer holiday.”
              He is commemorated on the war memorial at Emmanuel College, Cambridge and on the memorial to Harrow School Masters at Harrow School.
              He is buried at Putney Vale Cemetery and Crematorium Block D.4, Grave 343.

              Hilary Michael Peter Thomas was born in North London on the 26th of January 1917 the son of Herbert Samuel Thomas OBE, an artist, and Elizabeth Florette Gwynne (nee Bowen) Thomas of 9, St Stephens Crescent in London W.
              He was educated at Westminster School where he was up Busby’s from September 1930 to July 1934. He was a member of the 3rd Rowing VIII in 1932. On leaving school he became a designer and illustrator. He enlisted in the Royal Engineers in 1939 and attended an Officer Cadet Training Unit before being commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the The Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment) on the 14th of September 1940.
              While stationed at Malta with the 4th Battalion of his Regiment he volunteered to take part in a Commando raid on Tunis and was killed during the operation.
              He is commemorated on the Medjez-el-Bab Memorial Face 14.

              Patrick Peregrine Wilkie Young was born at Chelsea, London on the 13th of September 1913 the only son of Horace Edward Wilkie Young OW, Levant Consular service, and Agnes Margaret (nee Anson later Gladstone) Young of 16, Carlyle Mansions, Chelsea in London. He was christened at St Luke’s Church, Chelsea on the 16th of October 1913. He was educated at Westminster School where he was up Grant’s from May 1927 to July 1931. He was a skilled fencer with foil, epee and sabre and served as Hon. Secretary of the Fencing team from 1931 to 1932. He was appointed as the first Secretary of the Old Westminsters Fencing Club and was Secretary of the Graham-Bartlett Cup Committee. He matriculated for Trinity College, Oxford on the 7th of October 1932 where he was admitted as a commoner and was awarded a BA in 1935. On leaving university he went to work in the textile machinery industry and lived at Alston Londes, Waterhead near Oldham in Lancashire.
              Following the outbreak of war he enlisted as a Private in the Lancashire Fusiliers and attended an Officer Cadet Training Unit before being commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Middlesex Regiment on the 11th of February 1940.
              He is commemorated on the war memorial at Trinity College, Oxford.
              He is buried at Benghazi War Cemetery Plot 6, Row B, Grave 33.

              Ian Patrick Goold Walker was born at Kensington, London on the 15th of February 1914 the only son of Major George Goold Walker DSO, MC, FSA, Secretary of the Honourable Artillery Company, and Lilian Sophie (nee Grant) Walker of 29, Westbourne Terrace in London and of L’Etacq, Jersey in the Channel Islands. He was educated at Westminster School where he was up Grant’s from September 1927 to April 1932. On leaving school he entered the film industry and he enlisted in the Honourable Artillery Company in 1939, serving with their anti aircraft battery.
              He attended an Officer Cadet Training Unit before being commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Northamptonshire Yeomanry on the 7th of December 1940. He was attached to the Queen’s Bays and served with them in the North African campaign from El Alamein to Tunis. He was selected for a Staff training course but refused the offer as his Regiment was under orders to move to Italy.
              He was wounded on the 13th October 1944 during the fighting for the Gothic Line and died from his injuries nine months later.
              He is commemorated on the Coveney Roll of Honour.
              He is buried at Almorah Cemetery, St Helier Grave 22/13F.

D., F.R.C.P., of London; b. Oct. 12, 1892; adm. Sept. 22, 1904 (H); Exhibitioner 1905; K.S. (non-resident) 1906; elected to an exhibition at Ch. Ch. Oxon. July 1911, matric. Michaelmas 1911; B.A. 1914; appointed a temp. clerk in the Foreign Office Sept. 20, 1915; a King's Messenger in the Foreign Office Oct. 4, 1919; O.B.E. March 30, 1920; killed in an air raid on London Nov. 1940.

              George Pollock Antrobus was born at West Kensington, London on the 12th of October 1892 the only son of Edward Greason Antrobus CMG, an Accountant Officer of the Crown Agents of the Colonies, and Agnes Minnie (nee Pollock) Antrobus of 91, George Square, Westminster, later of 15, York Road, Leamington Spa in Warwickshire. He was christened at St Andrew’s Church, Kensington on the 14th of November 1982.
              He was educated at Westminster School where he was up Homeboarders from the 22nd of September 1904 to July 1911 and was awarded an Exhibition in 1905. He was a non resident King’s Scholar from 1906 and was a member of the Debating Society in 1910 and 1911. He matriculated for Christ Church, Oxford in 1911 where he read History and achieved a Second Class BA in 1914. He was appointed as a temporary clerk at the Foreign Office on the 20th of September 1915 and was appointed as a King’s Messenger on the 4th of October 1919. He was awarded the OBE for - “services in Parliamentary Department, Foreign Office” which was announced by St James’s Palace on the 30th of March 1920.
              He wrote the book, “King’s Messenger 1918-1940: Memoirs of a Silver Greyhound”, which was published by H, Jenkins in 1941. He retired from the civil service and went to live with his father at 15, York Road, Leamington Spa.
              On the night of the 13th/14th of November 1940, the Luftwaffe launched a major attack on the city of Coventry, dispatching some 515 bombers which dropped 500 tons of high explosive bombs, 30,000 incendiaries and 50 landmines on the city. During the raid, one enemy aircraft passed over Leamington Spa which dropped a stick of seven bombs across the town. That night Edward Antrobus had been attending a party at the home of Mr and Mrs Millett at 32, Portland Place and had just returned home, on what was his 80th birthday, when a single high explosive bomb hit the house at 10.58pm, killing him and his son George. There were four others killed in the town that night.
              Their funerals took place at All Saints Church, Leamington Spa
              He is commemorated on the Leamington Memorial to civilians lost in air raids.
              He is buried at Leamington Cemetery, Brunswick Street.

              Balfour, Ronald Egerton, 1896-1941

Jan. 19, 1911 (A); left Easter 1914; served in Great War I; temp. Sub-Lieut. R.N.V.R. Sept. 1, 1916; Lieut. Aug. 24, 1918; hydrophone officer; Lieut. ­ Cdr.; d. after a motor accident April 17, 1941.

              Ronald Egerton Balfour was born at Hamilton, Lanarkshire on the 24th of August 1896 the youngest son of Brigadier General Sir Alfred Granville Balfour KBE and Agnes Frances Elizabeth (nee Simpson) Balfour of 7, Durham Place, Smith Street, Chelsea. He was educated at Westminster School where he was up Ashburnham from 1911 to 1914.
              He enlisted as an Able Seaman in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on the 6th of May 1915 for the duration of hostilities. He was appointed as a Midshipman on the 21st of July 1915 and was posted to the depot ship HMS Vivid for service with Rear Admiral Grant at Pembroke Dockyard. He was recommended for promotion in May 1916 when he was described as “A very talented young officer”, but this was not approved as he had not reached the required age of 20. It was also noted by a superior that: - “He is of great assistance to me, clear headed, keen on his work, but not very strong physically. Has had no training in seamanship or any experience afloat but is of great use in this office.”
              He was promoted to Sub Lieutenant on the 1st of September 1916 and was posted to HMS President at Southampton as a Coding Officer on the 21st of June 1917. On the 13th of April 1918 he was posted to the battleship HMS Venerable for hydrophone duties and he transferred to Gibraltar on the 25th of June 1918 where he served on the Staff as a Hydrophone Officer on special duties.
              He was demobilised from the Navy on the 20th of February 1919 and went to work as an artist and illustrator, being known too as a dress and costume designer.
              In 1920, the publishers Constable & Company produced the “The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam” which was illustrated by Ronald Balfour and met with great critical acclaim. The Sphere magazine edition of the 20th of November 1920 carried the following: - “Mr Ronald Balfour, who has given us the newest edition of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, is, I am told, a cousin of Mr Arthur Balfour. What is of more importance, he is a very brilliant artist. In some of his pictures one suspects the influence of Beardsley, but then I am informed he had never seen Beardsley’s work when he made them. They are altogether a very charming interpretation of Edward FitzGerald’s great poem.”
              The Scotsman edition of the 25th of November 1920 wrote: - “Mr Balfour’s designs are fancifully Oriental in character, touched with a considerable suggestion of Aubrey Beardsley, and it is possible that his rather lank divinities might not have entirely appealed to the imagination of the Persian poet. The designs, however, display a remarkable lightness and grace of line, and some of the little line drawings, printed upon the brown paper which is also employed for the letterpress, are extremely dainty, while the more elaborate designs in black and white, or in colour, printed on plate paper, are quite brilliantly executed.”
              The Illustrated London News of the 27th of November 1920 wrote: - “Some of Mr Balfour’s illustrations to Omar Khayyam were done when he was little more than seventeen. Those most resembling the Aubrey Beardsley style were done before he had ever seen any of Beardsley’s”
              The Times of the 9th of December 1920 wrote: - “The Rubaiyat” can be had with new illustrations by Mr Ronald Balfour (Constable, 21s. net), who, in spite of the influence of Beardsley on his drawing, gives us in a few colour plates and in many black and white drawings (some of them just touched with colour) a vision of the poem which is original and sincere if at times surprising. Even the audacity of showing us in one place a young man and woman in modern evening dress is carried off without shocking us too deeply, because it is what Mr Balfour honestly sees.” In 1928 and 1929 he participated in an expedition to the Himalayas which was chronicled in the book “Thin Air” by Constance Bridges published by Brewer and Webster of New York in 1930, and was illustrated by Ronald Balfour.
              He was married at Westminster Cathedral on the 24th of April 1930 to Deirdre Phyllis Ulrica (nee Hart-Davis, later Wolfers, Brand and Inman); they lived at 24, Wellington Square, Chelsea and at Gadds Meadow, West Chiltington, Pulborough in Sussex. They had two daughters, Susan Mary, born in 1931, and Annabel Clare, born on the 20th of October 1935.
              In 1934 he was appointed as the Art Director of Fox British Productions at Wembley and designed at least one costume for the actress Anna May Wong for the 1934 production “Java Head”.
              On the outbreak of war he was recalled to the service with the rank of Acting Lieutenant Commander and he worked in the Map Room at the Admiralty.
              His wife and daughters sailed from Liverpool to New York on board the SS Britannic on the 21st of July 1940.
              On the night of the 16th/17th of April 1941 he was driving to his home in Sussex after a long day at the Admiralty. While he was driving on the Kingston bypass at Surbiton, Surrey he is thought to have fallen asleep at the wheel and was killed when his car left the road and crashed.
              His brother, Major James Alfred Balfour, 1st Battalion, Highland Light Infantry, was killed in action on the 11th of January 1917.
              He is not currently commemorated on the war memorial at Westminster School.
              He is buried at St Mary’s Church, West Chiltington.
