              Graham Templer “Swanny” Swann was born at Southborough, Kent on the 29th of June 1902 the son of the Reverend Arthur Henry Swann, Vicar of Christ Church, Hampstead, and Agnes Jane (nee Graham) Swann of 45, High Street, Harrow-on-the-Hill in Middlesex. He was educated at Westminster School where he was up Grant’s from the 21st of September 1916 to July 1921. He was appointed as a Monitor in 1920. He was a member of the 1st Cricket XI in 1921 when the Elizabethan wrote the following on his season: - “Not a polished batsman: should have confined himself to hitting simply and solely. Could bowl at a pinch; chiefly distinguished himself by energetic and, at times, brilliant out fielding.” He was awarded his School Cricket Colours in 1921. He was a member of the 2nd Football XI in 1919 and of the 1st Football XI from 1919 to 1921 where he played at inside right. The Elizabethan wrote the following on his 1920/21 season: - “Looks a good player, but never seems to do the right thing, largely due to over anxiousness. Must be more calm and collected, and must use his intelligence more for spotting openings. Has a fine burst of speed, a most useful asset.” He was awarded School Colours for Football in 1921. He was a member of the Officer Training Corps and was promoted to Lance Corporal in September 1920.
              He matriculated for Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1921 and was awarded a BA in Modern and Medieval Languages in 1924. He was the first civilian member of Toc H. On leaving university he was appointed as an assistant modern languages master at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth and later at Harrow School. While at Harrow he accompanied boys from the Air Training Section of the Officer Training Corps to a RAF Camp.
              He was awarded a Royal Aero Club Certificate (No. 10655) at Haldon Aerodrome on the 23rd of July 1932 while flying a Gypsy Moth aircraft.
              He was commissioned as a Pilot Officer on probation in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve on the 19th of July 1938 and was moblisied on the outbreak of war. He was promoted to Flying Officer on the 19th of January 1940 and by June 1941 he was billeted at “Sand Green”, Crossfield Avenue, Porthcawl in Glamorganshire.
              Graham Swann took off from RAF Stormy Down in Battle Mk I L5001, with his pilot, Pilot Officer Eric Geoffrey Kitching, for a co-operation exercise with a local Home Guard unit which was to take place at Margam Castle, Port Talbot. At the time, he had accumulated 840 hours of total solo flying time of which 698 were on Battle aircraft. As the aircraft was making a low level turn the pilot misjudged his height and the aircraft struck a 45 foot tree and crashed 200 yards further on in a field at Eglwysnunydd Farm on the Margam estate at 10.25am where it burst into flames on impact, killing both men. The wreckage was in three large pieces which were spread over an area of 60 yards. The bodies of the two men were taken to the mortuary at RAF Stormy Down.
              His brother-in-law, the Reverend G.V. Hart, received the following telegram dated the 23rd of June 1941: -“Deeply regret to inform you that your brother in law Flight Lieutenant Graham Templar Swann is reported to have lost his life as the result of an aircraft accident on June 22nd 1941. The Air Council express their profound sympathy. His mother had been informed.”
              His funeral took place on the 27th of June 1941.
              The Harrow School magazine, the Harrovian wrote: - “Of the many hundreds of boys who have passed through Harrow while Swanny was on the staff, there must be very few who cannot claim to have been his friends. To be in his French or German Division was often but the prelude to such a friendship and a good prelude it was. His intimate resource in keeping the subjects alive was the envy of all his Modern Languages colleagues. In many spheres of activity outside the form room he played a prominent part. He was a tireless Rugger coach – self-taught – be it added. It is typical of his enterprise, for he came from a soccer school and played his first Rugger games as a Dartmouth master. If he was missed on the cricket field, it was because he was indispensible for the Sailng Club. He shared willingly his exceptionally wide and varied interests. One would find groups of boys in his study at all hours of the day, listening to Bach or Beethoven on his gramophone, enjoying his inexhaustible fund of photographs or his War Museum. This last, by the way, was but one of his many hobbies, and one had to see him at work to realise what hobbies could mean. He took greatest pride of all in the creation of the model railway club, which, even since he left Harrow to join up, has had perhaps the largest following of any school club. If the above record fails to picture him as more than an attractive Mr. Chips, a glance at his other activities will soon dispel the illusion. A great traveller, he visited during his holidays every corner of the earth. Titles of lectures to the school and on the wireless, “£17 to India”, “With £10 across America” etc., bear witness to his venturesome spirit, which was indeed one of his most attractive facets. “The harder of two alternatives” was his guiding principle, and he had the courage to carry it through. With his colleagues he was universally popular. It was not everyone who agreed with his opinions, for his conclusions, inflexible as they were, he formed after long and deliberate thinking. But no one could fail to enjoy his quick wit and genial humour, and he was the kindest of friends. It was the spirit of adventure that led him to take up flying. After much useful work with the Air Training Section of the School O.T.C., he joined the R.A.F.V.R. shortly before the outbreak of war, and was called up when hostilities began. But he spent much of his leave at Harrow and kept many of his friendships alive; and those boys who were privileged to be his guests during A.T.C. camps at the R.A.F. station to which he was attached, will long treasure the memory of that fearless pilot who worked unstintingly on their behalf, sparing no pains to make their visit a happy one. Seldom has the war been brought more vividly to Harrow as a whole than by the news of Swanny’s death.”
              The Elizabethan wrote: - “His deep sympathy and insight into the character of his pupils, his sense of humour and the high standards he set himself and others evoked the respect and affection of all among whom he worked. He was fond of adventure and a great traveller, and is said to have completed a tour of 11,000 miles in one summer holiday.”
              He is commemorated on the war memorial at Emmanuel College, Cambridge and on the memorial to Harrow School Masters at Harrow School.
              He is buried at Putney Vale Cemetery and Crematorium Block D.4, Grave 343.

              Hilary Michael Peter Thomas was born in North London on the 26th of January 1917 the son of Herbert Samuel Thomas OBE, an artist, and Elizabeth Florette Gwynne (nee Bowen) Thomas of 9, St Stephens Crescent in London W.
              He was educated at Westminster School where he was up Busby’s from September 1930 to July 1934. He was a member of the 3rd Rowing VIII in 1932. On leaving school he became a designer and illustrator. He enlisted in the Royal Engineers in 1939 and attended an Officer Cadet Training Unit before being commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the The Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment) on the 14th of September 1940.
              While stationed at Malta with the 4th Battalion of his Regiment he volunteered to take part in a Commando raid on Tunis and was killed during the operation.
              He is commemorated on the Medjez-el-Bab Memorial Face 14.

              Ian Patrick Goold Walker was born at Kensington, London on the 15th of February 1914 the only son of Major George Goold Walker DSO, MC, FSA, Secretary of the Honourable Artillery Company, and Lilian Sophie (nee Grant) Walker of 29, Westbourne Terrace in London and of L’Etacq, Jersey in the Channel Islands. He was educated at Westminster School where he was up Grant’s from September 1927 to April 1932. On leaving school he entered the film industry and he enlisted in the Honourable Artillery Company in 1939, serving with their anti aircraft battery.
              He attended an Officer Cadet Training Unit before being commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Northamptonshire Yeomanry on the 7th of December 1940. He was attached to the Queen’s Bays and served with them in the North African campaign from El Alamein to Tunis. He was selected for a Staff training course but refused the offer as his Regiment was under orders to move to Italy.
              He was wounded on the 13th October 1944 during the fighting for the Gothic Line and died from his injuries nine months later.
              He is commemorated on the Coveney Roll of Honour.
              He is buried at Almorah Cemetery, St Helier Grave 22/13F.

              Young, Patric Peregrine Wilkie, 1913-1942

              Patrick Peregrine Wilkie Young was born at Chelsea, London on the 13th of September 1913 the only son of Horace Edward Wilkie Young OW, Levant Consular service, and Agnes Margaret (nee Anson later Gladstone) Young of 16, Carlyle Mansions, Chelsea in London. He was christened at St Luke’s Church, Chelsea on the 16th of October 1913. He was educated at Westminster School where he was up Grant’s from May 1927 to July 1931. He was a skilled fencer with foil, epee and sabre and served as Hon. Secretary of the Fencing team from 1931 to 1932. He was appointed as the first Secretary of the Old Westminsters Fencing Club and was Secretary of the Graham-Bartlett Cup Committee. He matriculated for Trinity College, Oxford on the 7th of October 1932 where he was admitted as a commoner and was awarded a BA in 1935. On leaving university he went to work in the textile machinery industry and lived at Alston Londes, Waterhead near Oldham in Lancashire.
              Following the outbreak of war he enlisted as a Private in the Lancashire Fusiliers and attended an Officer Cadet Training Unit before being commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Middlesex Regiment on the 11th of February 1940.
              He is commemorated on the war memorial at Trinity College, Oxford.
              He is buried at Benghazi War Cemetery Plot 6, Row B, Grave 33.

              Davies, Kenneth Frederick, 1918-1943

              Kenneth Frederick Davies was born at Acton, Middlesex on the 16th of December 1918 the son of Frederick Albert Davies, secretary to a public company, and Ellen Florence (nee Phillips) Davies of Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire. He was christened at St Martin’s Church, West Acton on the 21st of June 1919. He was educated at Westminster School where he was up Rigaud’s from September 1932 to December 1936. On leaving school he worked as an Assistant Transport Superintendant and lodged at 9, Nevern Square, Kensington in London.
              He enlisted in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve where he trained as an armourer and rose to the rank of Corporal.
              In January 1943, Kenneth Davies boarded the cruiser minelayer HMS Welshman (M84) , under the command of Captain William Howard Dennis Friedberger DSO RN, which was transporting men and stores from Malta to Tobruk. At 5.45pm on the 1st of February 1943, HMS Welshman was struck by two torpedoes from of a spread of four which had been fired by the U Boat U-617, under the command of Kapitänleutnant Albrecht Brandt. The main deck area flooded and she capsized and sank two hours later with the loss of 163 of her passengers and crew. Several of the casualties were caused by exploding depth charges as she sank. 118 survivors were picked up after five hours in the water by the destroyers HMS Tetcott and HMS Belvoir and were taken to Alexandria. A further 6 survivors were rescued by small craft which had sailed out from Tobruk.
              He is commemorated on the Malta Memorial Panel 9, Column 2.

              Anthony Dearmer was born at Streatham, London on the 23rd of June 1920 the youngest son of the Reverend Dr Percy Dearmer DD OW, Professor of Ecclesiastical Art at King’s College, London, and his second wife, Nancy “Nan” (nee Knowles) Dearmer of 48, Jubilee Place, Chelsea in London. He was educated at Westminster School where he was up Grant’s from September 1933 to April 1936.
              He enlisted in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve where he trained as a Wireless Operator/Air Gunner and rose to the rank of Sergeant.
              Anthony Dearmer took off on the 7th of April 1943 with his pilot, Flying Officer Taylor, in Beaufort Mk I DX114 for a training exercise. During the flight the aircraft was forced to ditch into the sea off the coast of Ayr. His body was recovered from the sea some 2 miles to the North East of Ailsa Craig. Flying Officer Taylor survived the accident.
              He is buried at Greenock Cemetery Section CCC Grave 1333.

              Adrian John Clark was born in London on the 9th of April 1889 the son of Mateo Clark, a railway contractor, and Blanche (nee Leslie) Clark of 128, Coleherne Court, Old Brompton Road, South Kensington. He was educated at Westminster School where he was a King’s Scholar and was up Ashburnham from the 24th of September 1903 to July 1906. He and was non resident from January 1905 and was a member of the Westminster School Cadet Corps until 1906. He was a member of the Fencing team in 1906 and competed in the Public Schools Events on the 6th of April that year. He won the School Sabre Competition in the same year. He went on to London University where he read Law and graduated LLb in 1910. He was called to the Bar in the Inner Temple on the 8th of June 1910 and worked in the South East Circuit and Central Criminal Court from chambers at 3, Temple Gardens, Temple.
              He applied for a commission in the 23rd (County of London) Battalion, London Regiment on the 9th of January 1909. At a medical examination it was recorded that he was six feet and one half inches tall. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Battalion on the 20th of January 1909 and was promoted to Lieutenant on the 4th of March 1910. He was promoted to Captain on the 20th of March 1911.
              He was mobilised on the outbreak of war and went with the Battalion to St Albans where he volunteered for overseas service on the 26th of August 1914. He embarked for service in France with the 1/23rd Battalion of his Regiment at Southampton on board the SS Copenhagen at 7pm on the 14th of March 1915 and landed at Le Havre at 8am the following morning.
              On the 2nd of May 1915 the Battalion was in billets at Le Touret when Adrian Clark was admitted to hospital with septicaemia. He was embarked on board a hospital ship at Boulogne on the 8th of May and landed at Dover later on the same day. He returned to the Battalion and went on leave on the 19th of December 1915, boarding the SS Archangel at Le Havre the next day and landed at Southampton on the 21st of December. He returned from leave on the 27th of December 1915. On the 4th of November 1916, the 1/23rd Battalion entered support trenches at Belgian Chateau in the Hill 60 Sector in the Ypres salient. During this time Adrian Clark suffered a blow to the left eye and he returned to England on the 7th of November where he was admitted to Queen Alexandra’s Hospital, Millbank on the 13th of November. He attended a Medical Board, which was held at the War Office on the 30th of January 1917, where he was declared as being fit for general service.
              He was Mentioned in Despatches, which was announced in the London Gazette of the 4th of January 1917.
              He was appointed as a Deputy Assistant Adjutant General for the 3rd Army on the 6th of February 1917 and was promoted to Major on the 21st of March 1918. He later served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Air Force. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire in the King’s Birthday Honours List of the 3rd of June 1919. He was demobilised on the 2nd of May 1919 and resigned his commission on the 30th of September 1921.
              On leaving the army he served as a Stipendiary Magistrate in Trinidad from 1924 to 1927 and as a Judge in the High Court of Jamaica from 1927 to 1934. He was married on the 12th of June 1929 to Marguerite Murial (nee Brooks), later of Burleigh House, Brimscombe in Gloucestershire. He served as Deputy Public Prosecutor at Singapore from the 11th of September 1934 to 1936 and for the Straits Settlements from 1936 to 1937. In 1937 he was appointed as Legal Adviser to the Federated Malay States and worked from the Legal Advisers Chambers at Kuala Lumpur. He also served as a Major in the Selangor Local Defence Corps.
              He was captured by the Japanese at the fall of Singapore on the 15th of February 1942 and was interned at Changi Barracks. Just after dawn on the 10th of October 1943, all of the internees at Changi were paraded for a roll call. A short time later Japanese Military Police, the Kempei tai, arrived and called out the names of fifty seven internees who were labelled and segregated. Three of these were women. A search of the of the barracks was carried out with the belongings of all internees being searched for radio telephony equipment which the Japanese believed was being used to contact people in Singapore to incite sabotage and anti Japanese activities outside the camp. Throughout the search the internees were made to stand in the sun without food or water until it was concluded at 6pm when they were allowed to return to the prison. The fifty seven men who had been separated were then taken to the Kempei tai Centre in Singapore for interrogation. They were detained in small cells or cages where they were given no bedding and with bright overhead lights burning throughout the night. From 8am to 10pm they were forced to sit up straight on the floor and were not allowed to move other than to use the toilets. The prisoners were beaten and tortured throughout their internment and on some occasions were told that they were to be executed. Adrian Clark died from dysentery at the Kempei tai Prison, Singapore. He was one of fifteen internees who died during the Double Tenth Incident.

              A trial of the Japanese participants in the Double Tenth Incident began on the 18th of March 1946 and was concluded on the 15th of April, with the death sentence being passed on eight members of the Kempei tai with life sentences passed on three more. Three more received sentences of between 8 and 15 years and six others were acquitted. Their commander, Lieutenant Colonel Haruzo Sumida, was hanged.
              Clark is buried at Kranji War Cemetery Plot 35, Row G, Grave 13.

              Clout, Norman Charles Herbert, 1922-1941

              Norman Charles Herbert Clout was born at Bromley, Kent on the 23rd of November 1922 the third and youngest son of Major Charles William Clout, London Regiment and General Staff, and Mary Ellen (nee Weekes) Clout of Camden Ridge, Chislehurst in Kent, later of 44, Montrose Avenue, Sidcup in Kent. He was educated at Westminster School where he was up Ashburnham from September 1935 to July 1940.
              He enlisted in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve on the 23rd of November 1940 and was posted to No. 9 Flying Training School based at RAF Hullavington for pilot training in May 1941.
              Norman Clout took off from in Hurricane Mk I N2402 on the 21st of August 1941 for a solo training flight. At the time he had accumulated a total of 65.55 hours of solo flying time, of which 8.25 hours were on Hurricanes.
              Having completed the exercise he was diverted to RAF Shawbury, possibly due to poor weather. When he arrived over the airfield at 5.30pm he made a circuit before approaching the runway to land. On landing he overshot the landing point and touched down three quarters of the way down the runway where the aircraft bounced into the air, most probably because he had applied the brakes. The aircraft skidded along the ground and turned over onto its back causing extensive damage to the fuselage, fins and rudder.
              He was taken to the Royal Salop Hospital at Shrewsbury suffering from concussion and fractures to the third and fourth cervical bones in his neck. He had paraplegia in both of his arms and legs. He was transferred to the Royal Air Force Hospital, Cosford where he died from his injuries the following day.
              His mother received the following telegram dated the 22nd of August 1941: - “Regret to inform you that your son 1330092 LAC Norman Charles Clout died in RAF Hospital Cosford near Wolverhampton on 22/8/41 as result of a flying accident on evening of 21/8/41 and tender deepest sympathy. Should you desire a private funeral coffin will be sent to railway station nearest your home, date and time of arrival being notified to you by telegram later, otherwise service funeral will be held at Cosford. If you desire to attend and cannot afford expenses one railway warrant will be issued on presentation of this telegram at the nearest police station. Please telegraph your decision as soon as possible. Your son Lieutenant C.H. Clout at Park Hall Camp, Oswestry, is being informed by me. Flying Officer L. H. Spencer”
              His funeral took place on the 27th of August 1941.
              He is buried at Chislehurst Cemetery Section A, Grave 2190.

              Gammon, Frederick David, son of Sidney Gammon, HM Penge CS, Kent, and Olive Mary Gam­mon; b. 12 Nov. 1921; adm. May 1935 (G); left Mar. 1940; killed in an air raid Oct. 1940.

              Frederick David Gammon was born in Northamptonshire on the 12th of November 1921 the only son of Sidney Gammon MA, Headmaster of Beckenham County School for Boys, and Olive Mary Ulph (nee Woollard) Gammon of 9, Foxgrove Avenue, Beckenham in Kent. He was educated at Westminster School where he was up Grant’s from May 1935 to March 1940.
              Following the outbreak of war he served as a member of a First Aid Party in the Civil Defence. He and both of his parents were killed when their home was hit by a high explosive bomb during an enemy air raid.
              A memorial service w held in their memory on the 28th of October 1940.
              He is buried at Beckenham Cemetery.

              Fevez, David Gronow Eugene, son of Eugene Leon Fevez of Esher and his second wife Ethel Gronow, d. of Frederick William Oliver (qv); half brother of Derek John Fevez (qv); b. 12 Jan. 1919; adm. Sept. 1932 (G); left July 1936; PO RAF, killed in action over France June 1940.

              David Gronow Eugene Fevez was born at “Eversleigh”, Addlestone, Chertsey, Surrey on the 12th of January 1919 the elder son of Eugene Leon Fevez OW, a director of a wholesale textile company, and his second wife, Ethel Gronow (nee Oliver) Fevez of “Eversleigh”, Addlestone, Chertsey, later of 24, Woodville Road, Bexhill-on-Sea in Sussex. He was educated at Westminster School where he was up Grant’s’ from September 1932 to July 1936. He attended the Flying School at Gatwick airfield on the 8th of August 1939 and was commissioned as an Acting Pilot Officer on probation in the Royal Air Force on the 9th of October 1939. He was posted to No. 3 Initial Training Wing at Hastings, Kent on the 9th of October 1939 for pilot training and to No. 3 Service Flying Training School at RAF South Cerney on the 21st of October 1939. He was promoted to Pilot Officer on probation on the 28th of April 1940 and was posted to No. 1 School of Air Cooperation on the same day. He was posted to 26 Squadron on the 29th of May 1940, who had been based at Authie airfield in France before moving to RAF Lympne on the 20th of May 1940.
              David Fevez and his Observer/Air Gunner, Sergeant Robert Donald Keiler Cochrane, took off from Boos near Rouen on the morning of 5th of June 1940 in Lysander Mk II N1211 for a reconnaissance of the Somme area. The aircraft was flying to the south west of Abbeville when it was attacked and shot down by Hauptmann Muller of 4./JG3. The aircraft crashed near Ercourt at 12.10pm killing both men.
              His mother received the following telegram dated the 6th of June 1940: - “Regret to inform you that your son Pilot Officer David Gronow Fevez is reported missing as the result of air operations on 5th June 1940. Letter follows. Any further information received will be immediately communicated to you. Should information reach you from any source please inform this department.”
              One of the bodies of the crew was found by the Germans close to the wreckage of the aircraft and was buried at the crash site. Two months later another body was found in a wood some 200 yards from the crash site and was wearing an unopened parachute. He was buried with his comrade. In 1941 some locals moved them to the village cemetery and marked them both as unknown airmen. In 1946 No. 1 Missing Research and Enquiry Unit, Royal Air Force exhumed the bodies, identified them and reburied them at the same location.
              His brother, Captain Robin Louis Gronow Fevez OW, 2/5th Battalion, The Queen’s Royal Regiment (West Surrey) was killed in action on the 10th of September 1943.
              He is buried at Ercourt Churchyard Cemetery, France.
