        TAVERNER, JOHN, third son of Peter Taverner, Hexton, Herts., and Frances, dau. of Thomas Docwra, Putteridge, Herts.; b. 1584; at school under Camden (M. I. Stoke Newington, Middlesex); Trinity Coll. Cambridge, adm. pens. c. 1597, scholar 1599; BA 1601/2; MA 1605 (incorp. Oxford 10 Mar 1605/6); Secretary to Right Rev. John King (qv), Bishop of London, for nine years; Professor of Music, Gresham Coll., London, from 17 Nov 1610; ordained deacon 24 Dec 1620, priest 13 Mar 1624/5 (both London); Vicar of Tillingham, Essex 1624-9; Rector of Hexton, Herts., from 1629; Rector of Stoke Newington, Middlesex, from 30 Sep 1629; the autograph MS of nine of his lectures is preserved in the British Library (Sloane MS 2329); d. unm. Aug 1638. DNB (s. v. Richard Taverner).
