VANBRUGH, CHARLES, only surviving son of Sir John Vanbrugh, Kt, dramatist and architect, and Henrietta Maria, eldest child of Lieut. -Col. James Yarburgh, Snaith Hall, Yorks., 1st Foot Guards; b. 20 Oct 1720; adm. (aged 11) Jun 1732 (Bourne); left 1736; adm. Inner Temple 12 Feb 1735/6; went to Lausanne, Switzerland, to complete his studies, and while there became a member of the Compagnie des Nobles Fusillers, 29 Apr 1738; Ensign, 2nd Foot Guards 24 Apr 1741; went with regiment to Flanders 1744; d. 13 May 1745, from wounds received at the battle of Fontenoy two days previously.
