MSS 32694, ff 545-6, 589); living in Venice from c. 1700; initially worked for Thomas Williams, a banker there; became partner in firm Williams & Smith, bankers and meat importers, and manager of their business interests in Venice from 1720; British Consul, Venice Jun 1744-60; a well-known collector of books, manuscripts and paintings; patron of the Venetian painter Canaletto; a catalogue of his collection of printed books was published in 1755, and the collection was sold as a whole to King George III in the early 1760s; m. 1st, c. 1717 Catherine Tofts, opera singer; m. 2nd, 1757 Elizabeth, sister of John Murray, British Resident, Venice; d. at Venice 6 Nov 1770.
