Nehemiah Evance, Great Hanwood, Shropshire; b. 23 May 1678; at school under Busby (D’Arblay, Memoirs of Dr Burney, 1832, i, xii-xiv); a pupil of the painter Michael Dahl; living at Coton Hill, near Shrewsbury, 1726, but shortly afterwards went to Chester, where he set up as a portrait painter and a teacher of drawing; m. 1st, Rebecca Ellis, actress at Goodman’s Fields Theatre; m. 2nd, 6 May 1721, Ann Cooper, heiress and celebrated beauty; d. Jan 1749.
