ELSYNGE, HENRY, eldest son of Henry Elsynge, Battersea, Surrey, Clerk of Parliaments, House of Lords, and barrister, Middle Temple, and his first wife Blanch, dau. of Richard Hyett, Cornwell, Oxfordshire; nephew of Thomas Knyvett (qv); b.; bapt. 2 Mar 1606 at St Dunstan-in-the-West [DNB]; at school under Wilson (Camdeni Insignia, 1624); Christ Church, Oxford, matr. 24 Jul 1624, aged 18; BA 1625; adm. Middle Temple 24 Nov 1628; travelled abroad for seven years; Clerk of the House of Commons 21 Dec 1639 – 5 Jan 1649, when he resigned to avoid taking part in the proceedings against Charles I; retired to Hounslow, Middlesex; author, Of the Form and Manner of holding a Parliament in England, 1663 (a treatise largely or wholly the work of his father), and other works; m. 8 Nov 1636 Margaret, sister of Richard Tias (qv); d.
