FEARNE, CHARLES, eldest son of Charles Fearne, Deputy Secretary of the Admiralty and Judge Advocate of the Fleet, and Anne Bouhault (IGI); bapt. St. John, Smith Square 20 Feb 1741 (IGI); at school under Markham (The Georgian Era, ii, 542-3); adm. Inner Temple 6 Jan 1766, called to bar 23 Nov 1774; as a barrister in chambers, was said at one point to have been “more consulted than any man of his time”, but he allowed his practice to slip away; author, Essay on the Learning of Contingent Remainders and Executory Devises, 1772, distinguished for its close and sustained reasoning; discovered a new process of dyeing morocco leather; m. 29 Aug 1768 Mary Excelle; d. 25 Feb 1794.
