Galway; a friend of the Wesleys and of Whitfield; a constant speaker at English and Irish revivalist meetings, and frequently in conflict with his bishop and fellow clergy; Chaplain to his cousin, the Countess of Huntingdon; took an active part with Augustus Montagu Toplady (qv) on the Calvinist side in the famous Methodist controversy on justification by faith; assisted the Countess of Huntingdon in revising the hymns used in her chapels 1774; author, Gospel Repentance, 1760, and of several well-known hymns; m. 27 Aug 1766 Henrietta Maria, dau. of John Phillips, Swords, co.
