ADAMS, WILLIAM, son of John Adams, Shropshire, barrister, compiler of the Index Villaris, and Jane, fifth dau. of Sir Walter Wrottesley, Bart.; b.; adm.; KS 1686; elected head to Christ Church, Oxford 1691, matr. 4 Jul 1691, aged 18, Westminster Student 24 Dec 1691 – void 30 Jul 1713 (expiry year of grace as R. Staunton-upon-Wye), Tutor 1700-5; BA 1695; MA 1698; ordained; Curate, St Thomas’s, Oxford, 1700; admonished by college for scandalous words about William Lloyd, Bishop of Worcester, 20 Dec 1706; Rector of Staunton-upon-Wye, Herefs., from 26 Jul 1712; a highly esteemed preacher; published an edition of Cornelius Nepos, 1697; fifteen of his sermons before the University of Oxford were published by Dr Sacheverell in 1716; dead at 6 Aug 1714.
