ASGILL, SIR CHARLES, BART., only son of Sir Charles Asgill (qv), and his second wife; b. 7 Apr 1762; adm. 29 Mar 1769; in school list Oct 1775; left 1777; Ensign, 1st Foot Guards 27 Feb 1778; Lieut. and Capt. 3 Feb 1781; Capt. and Lieut. -Col. 3 Mar 1790; Col. in the Army 26 Feb 1795; Brig. -Gen. on the staff in Ireland 1797; Maj. -Gen. 1 Jan 1798; 3rd Maj., 1st Foot Guards 25 Nov 1799; Col. 46th Foot 9 May 1800; Lieut. -Gen. 1 Feb 1805; Col., 5th West India Regt. 8 Feb 1806; Col., 85th Foot 30 Oct 1806 – Feb 1807, 11th Foot from 25 Feb 1807; Gen. 4 Jun 1814; served in America and taken prisoner at capitulation of Yorktown 1781; chosen by lot to suffer death in retaliation for execution of Capt. Huddy by American loyalists, but through French intervention was released on parole by Act of Congress 7 Nov 1781; served in Flanders 1794 and in Ireland during rebellion of 1798; succ. father as 2nd baronet 15 Sep 1788; m. 28 Aug 1790 Jemima Sophia, youngest dau. of Admiral Sir Chaloner Ogle, Bart.; d. 23 Jul 1823. DNB.
