Ireland; b.; at school under Busby, where he was a great friend of Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sunderland (qv) (HMC 12th Report, App. V, 190); served as volunteer with army in Flanders 1692; MP Derbyshire Oct 1695 - Nov 1701, Castle Rising Feb - Jul 1702, Yorkshire Jul 1702 - Aug 1707; Capt., Yeomen of the Guard, 18 Jan 1702- Sep 1707; LLD Cambridge 16 Apr 1705; a Commissioner for the Union with Scotland, 10 Apr 1706; succ. father as 2nd Duke of Devonshire 18 Aug 1707; Lord Steward of the Household, 6 Sep 1707 - 21 Sep 1710, 24 Sep 1714 - 6 Jul 1716; Privy Councillor 8 Sep 1707; Lord Lieut., Derbyshire 6 Nov 1707 - 5 Sep 1711, and from 15 Oct 1714; KG 22 Mar 1710; Lord President of the Council 6 Jul 1716 - 16 Apr 1717, and from 27 Mar 1726; acted five times as one of the Lord Justices; m. 21 Jun 1688 Rachel, eldest dau. of William Russell, Lord Russell MP; d. 4 Jun 1729.
