Cratford, Edward (or Cratforde). Born Shropshire 1521 ; one of the scholars in receipt of an exhibition at Oxford Univ. from the Dean and Chapter of Worcester 1543-4 (A.F.Leach, Early Education in Worcester, 160) ; BA Oxford, adm. 2 Oct 1540, determined 1541, MA 9 Feb 1545; All Souls Coll.Oxford, Fellow, adm.1540, Arts Dean 1545-6, vacated 1547 ; migr. to Christ Church, Oxford, Student (theologus) 1547, vacated by Sep 1557, with interval Oct 1552 – May 1554 ; supplicated for leave to lecture on Pauline epistles 1551-2 ; Under Master, Westminster School Mich.1552 – Easter 1554 ; by Act of Chapter 3 Dec 1552 “Patches House”, which stood near the entrance to the Dark Cloister, was allotted to him as a residence “untyll sotche tyme as the said Edward Cratford shall be otherwyse well provided for” ; ordained deacon 22 Sep 1554 (London), priest 22 Dec 1554 (Bishop of Sidon at Oxford) ; Chaplain to Philip and Mary 6 Sep 1555 ; Vicar of North Petherton, Somerset, vacated by Jan 1558 ; Rector of Lydeard St.Lawrence, Somerset, deprived by Jan 1560 ; Canon and Prebendary of Wells, deprived 1560 ; said to have gone abroad ; presumably “Crockford” who occurs in a list of Catholic fugitives dated 29 Jan 1576 ; d. abroad, apparently in Spain, before 1588.
