Thomas Dilkes, 49th Foot, and Margaret, third dau. of Robert Denny, Eye, Suffolk; b.; adm. 20 Jan 1777; RMA Woolwich 1779-82; Ensign, 49th Foot 4 Dec 1779; Lieut., 103rd Foot 3 Nov 1781; Ensign, 3rd Foot Guards 20 Mar 1783; Adjutant, 27 Oct 1790; Lieut. and Capt., 25 Apr 1792; Capt. and Lieut. -Col., 4 Feb 1797; Col. in the Army 30 Oct 1805; Brig. -Gen. in Feb 1810; Maj. -Gen., 4 Jun 1811; Lieut. -Gen., 12 Aug 1819; General, 10 Jan 1837; ADC to Maj. - Gen. Charles O’Hara (qv, ?) when Governor of Gibraltar in 1788-9; served in Flanders 1793-5, on expedition to the Helder 1799 and in Peninsular War 1810-11; second in command at battle of Barrosa 5 Mar 1811, receiving thanks of both Houses of Parliament and freedom of City of London for his services there; Lieut. -Governor, Quebec, 2 Oct 1829; d. 27 Dec 1841.
