DOLBEN, WILLIAM, only son of John Dolben, Haverfordwest, Pembs., and Alice, dau. of Richard Myddelton, Denbigh, and niece of Sir Hugh Myddelton MP, projector of the New River; b.; adm.; QS; elected head to Christ Church, Oxford 1603, matr. 10 Feb 1603/4, aged 16, Westminster Student to 1607; BA 1607; migrated to All Souls Coll.; MA 1610 (incorp. Cambridge 1614); BD 1617; DD 1619; ordained; Rector of Stackpole Elidor, Pembs., 1616-8; Rector of Lawrenny, Pembs., 28 Sep 1620-3; Rector of Llanynys, Denbighshire, 1623; Rector of St. Bartholomew by the Exchange, London 11 Jul – Nov 1623; Rector of Stanwick and of Benefield, Northants., from 8 Nov 1623; Prebendary of Lincoln from 31 Aug 1629; his great-grandson Sir John Dolben, Bart. (qv), claimed that he was nominated Bishop of Gloucester shortly before his death, but it seems more probable that the intended diocese was Bangor; m. Elizabeth, dau. of Capt. Hugh Williams, Coghwillan, Caernarvonshire, and niece of Most Rev. John Williams DD, Archbishop of York; buried Stanwick, Northants. 19 Sep 1631. DNB.
