        DONKIN, SIR RUFANE SHAW, only son of Gen. Robert Donkin, and Mary, dau. of Rev. Emanuel Collins; b. Sep 1772; adm. 8 Apr 1782; left 1787; Ensign, 44th Foot 21 Mar 1778; Lieut., 9 Sep 1779; Capt., 31 May 1793; Maj., 1 Sep 1795; Lieut. -Col., 11th Foot 24 May 1798; on staff Quartermaster-General’s Dept., May 1805; Brevet Col., 24 Apr 1808; Maj. -Gen., 4 Jun 1811; Lieut. -Gen., 19 Jul 1821; Col. 80th Foot 20 Apr 1825, 11th Foot 15 Mar 1837; Gen., 25 Jun 1838; served in West Indies 1794, 1796 (invalided home from Martinique), on expedition to Ostend 1798 (wounded, prisoner), and as Assistant QMG at Copenhagen 1807; Assistant QMG, Portugal 1808-9; as Col. on the Staff commanded a brigade in operations on the Douro and at the battle of Talavera; QMG Sicily 1810-3; commanded second field division in Mahratta War 1817-8; KCB 14 Oct 1818; invalided to Cape of Good Hope, where he acted as Governor in Lord Charles Somerset’s absence 1820-1; GCH 1825; MP (Whig) Berwick on Tweed 1832-7, Sandwich from Feb 1839; Surveyor-Gen. of the Ordnance from 25 Apr 1835; FRS 23 Feb 1826; one of the original Fellows of the Royal Geographical Society; author, A Dissertation on the Course and probable Termination of the River Niger, 1829, and a contributor to various periodicals; m. 1st, 30 Aug 1815 Elizabeth Frances, eldest dau. of George Markham (adm. 1769, qv); m. 2nd, 5 May 1832 Lady Anna Maria Elliot, dau. of Gilbert Elliot, 1st Earl of Minto PC; committed suicide 1 May 1841.
