Jan 1772 - Dec 1775; succ. father as 10th Earl of Westmorland 26 Apr 1774; Emmanuel Coll. Cambridge, adm. nob. 25 Jan 1776; MA 1778; adm. Middle Temple 12 Feb 1772; while at Cambridge he formed a friendship with William Pitt, which continued through life; joint Postmaster-General 19 Sep 1789 - Jan 1790; Privy Councillor 14 Oct 1789; Lord Lieutenant of Ireland 5 Jan 1790 - Jan 1795, being recalled on account of his opposition to Catholic emancipation; LLD Trinity Coll.
