JOHN, son of Heneage Finch, 4th Earl of Aylesford (qv); b. 13 Mar 1793; adm.; left 1806; Cornet, 15th Light Dragoons 5 Oct 1809; Lieut., 20 Dec 1810; Capt., 37th Foot 17 Feb 1814; half-pay 25 May 1817; Maj., Royal West India Rangers 5 Mar 1818; Lieut. -Col. in Army 25 Oct 1823; Col. in Army 28 Jun 1838; Maj. -Gen., 11 Nov 1851; Lieut. -Gen., 20 Feb 1855; Col., 24th Foot from 19 Jun 1856; served in Peninsular War; wounded at Vittoria 1813; CB 26 Dec 1818; Military Secretary to Stapleton Cotton, 1st Viscount Combermere (qv) while Commander-in-Chief, India; present at siege and capture of Bhurtpore 1826; m. 28 Jul 1835 Katherine, dau. of Alexander Ellice; d. 25 Nov 1861.
