        FLUDYER, SIR SAMUEL, BART., eldest son of Samuel Fludyer, London, clothier, and Elizabeth, dau. of Pierre de Montsallier, of a French Protestant family; b. 1705; at school under Freind (Steward, Anniversary Dinner 1763); entered father’s business, in which he made a large fortune; member, Common Council, City of London, Bassishaw Ward 1734-51; Alderman, City of London, Cheap Ward 26 Jun 1751; member, Company of Tylers and Bricklayers to 1752, when he was translated to the Clothworkers’ Company; Sheriff of London for year 1754-5; knighted 19 Sep 1755; created baronet 14 Nov 1759; Lord Mayor of London for year 1761-2; MP Chippenham from 1754; a Director, Bank of England 1753-5, 1756-8, 1759-62, and from 1763, Deputy Governor from 1766; satirised by Charles Churchill (qv) as “Dulman” in The Ghost, iii, 993-8; m. 1st, Jane Clerke, Westminster; m. 2nd, 2 Sep 1758 Caroline, dau. of Hon. James Brudenell MP; d. 18 Jan 1768. DNB.
