FOX-STRANGWAYS, WILLIAM THOMAS HORNER, 4TH EARL OF ILCHESTER, eldest son of Henry Fox-Strangwways, 2nd Earl of Ilchester, and his second wife Juliana, dau. of Hon. William Digby (qv); b. 7 May 1795; adm. Lady Day 1807; KS (Capt. ) 1809; his “Diary of the Challenge of 1809” is printed in F. H. Forshall, Westminster School Past and Present, 1884, pp 575-84; elected to Christ Church, Oxford 1813, matr. 1 Jun 1813, Westminster Student; BA 1816; MA 1820; attaché, British Embassies at St. Petersburg 1816-20, Constantinople 1820-2, Naples 1822-4, and The Hague 1824; Secretary of Legation, Florence 1825-8, Naples 1828-32; Secretary to Embassy, Vienna 1832; Under Secretary, Foreign Office Aug 1835- Mar 1840; Envoy Extraordinasry at Frankfurt Mar 1840- Jan 1849; succ. half-brother as 4th Earl of Ilchester 3 Jan 1858; m. 21 Jul 1857 Sophia Penelope, second dau. of Sir Robert Sheffield, Bart. (qv); d. 10 Jan 1865.
