TICKELL, RICHARD, brother of Thomas Tickell (qv); b. 1751; adm. 19 Jun 1764; at Eton Coll. 29 May 1765-8; adm. Middle Temple 8 Nov 1768; called to bar [check : not at Middle Temple]; a Commissioner of Bankrupts (occurs in annual list 1777); obtained pension of £200 p. a. by writing for the Government; Commissioner, Stamp Office, from 24 Aug 1781; produced The Camp, a musical entertainment, at Drury Lane 15 Oct 1778; his pamphlet Anticipations, published Nov 1778, offering a satirical forecast of parliamentary proceedings, had a great success; his opera, The Carnival of Venice, was produced at Drury Lane 13 Dec 1781; becoming connected with Sheridan, the husband of his first wifeís sister, he transferred his pen to the support of Charles James Fox and was elected to Brooksí Club 1785; received financial loan from Warren Hastings (qv) 1793; m. 1st, 25 Jul 1780 Mary, second dau. of Thomas Linley, senior, musical composer; m. 2nd, 24 Aug 1789 Sarah, dau. of Capt. Thomas Ley, EI Maritime Service; killed himself by jumping off the parapet outside the window of his room at Hampton Court 4 Nov 1793. DNB.
