GERRARD, JOHN; b. c. 1754; at school under Markham (Memoirs of William Hickey iii, 326); E. I. Maritime Service; Midshipman, 1774; 5th Mate 1776; 3rd Mate 1778 (approved 21 Oct 1778, aged 24); 2nd Mate 1781; Capt. of ships Deptford 1784 -93, and Pitt 1795-6; taken prisoner with wife by French, and interned at Verdun 1803; m. Elizabeth Magdalen, dau. of Richard Turner, and sister of Gen. Sir Tomkyns Hilgrove Turner GCH, Groom of the Bedchamber and Secretary to Prince Regent, subsequently Governor of Bermuda.
