Just returned from Tunbridge Wells, leaving behind those he would rather be with. Has a great secret, which seems to be on the point of coming out - but PE is against this. Has received a promotion, and went to T Wells to provide lodgings for his mother (which she did not occupy). Stayed at Mr D's. A very wordy account of his relations with the daughter of the household - his brother Henry came to stay and was involved. How are his attentions to and friendship with the girl to be interpreted? Is he being honourable? Appears to decide on making a proposal - but by letter or in person? (NB He died unmarried.)
PE's box hedge is too thick - he would like some for his own garden. Invitation to dinner.
Has some pears for PE, to be put into a tin or tinned vessel.
Sardonic account of Herries (John Charles) going to Ireland as Chief Commissioner.
Still too busy to visit, and when the job is done he will go with brother Henry (who really needs a holiday) to stay in Henley. Courtenay (Thomas Peregrine, OW), has gone to Totnes to secure his parliamentary seat.
Transcription of title page of an edition of Euripides (heidelberg 1597), with parallel translation into Latin. Describes an 'indecent' image of a naked woman in a medallion.
Father has died of a stroke - asks PE to conduct the funereal in Covent Garden Church.
Letter delivered by Chantrey (Sir Francis Leggatt? - sculptor), by which Bedford hopes to introduce him to PE. Idle news of friends.
Urgently persuades PE to take care of himself, and before he returns to Oxford to consult Dr Paris of Dover Street (John Ayrton Paris) - no reason why he and Kidd (Regius Professor should not work together, despite separation of 56 miles. PE to tell Kidd that his salary as Regius Professor is now payable at the Exchequer.
Glad to hear from Kidd and Mrs Elmsley that PE is better. Exhorts PE to take exercise, and to allow Bedford (who has been in conversation with Bigge) to purchase a chaise on his behalf.
