Has been to Waddon and heard that PE has enquired about a horse - strongly urges the risks of this, and to allow him and Bigge to purchase a chaise instead. Busy life at Westminster. Cliques and the effect of the arrival of girls in sixth form. [4.09] Stayed in touch with surprisingly few Westminster schoolmates. [6.21] PHAB. How it has changed over the years. His work gave it more stability, health and safety clearance and financial stability. [10.54] PHAB’s expansion over the years, and possible reasons for its growth. [13.54] Difference between his school days and time as a teacher. School now seems better able to help pupils who are less academically gifted than the others. School takes part in more outreach and charity work. School facilities much better. The Manoukian Music Centre, Millicent Fawcett Hall [theatre], Weston’s [classrooms] and Lawrence Hall [sports centre] were all acquired after his schooldays. Purchased by Eddie Smith and is owned by the Common Room at Westminster School. The trophy is given to the winners of the croquet match between the School and Westminster Abbey and is kept by the winners for a year. The inscriptions are: 'Collegium Westmonasteriensium Victores Lusionis Malleipilaris Intracollegiatae ex dono Sanctuarii Curatoris 2006' and '2006 Abbatia', '2007 Schola', '2008 Abbatia', '2009 Schola'. The School retained the trophy in 2010 but, at time of cataloguing (12 October 2010), this had yet to be engraved.

Asks for two copies of PEW's Sophocles (one for him, one for his uncle Tom). C Burney has been to dinner - talk of mss., one supposedly the 1st act of Sophocles' Clytemnestra, but probably a composition of the time of Gregory Nazianzen, and the other a ninth century Plato containing nothing new, but which might confirm some readings. PE needs good corrector - he does not possess attention enough to proofread.

Uses compasses (v.398) as excuse for not writing sooner, but in truth has been busy with 'the infernal defence of the country.' Abortive visit to Hafod (Uchtryd), arranged by his elder brother, to visit Thomas Johnes and the house, and to see the Froissart ms. (Johnes' translation?) - saw no more than the outside of the larder and library. Four days at Keswick with Southey - mornings spent scrambling among mountains and waterfalls, evenings reading Madoc and Portuguese History (NB latter never finished only Part 1 published, The History of Brazil). Miss (2nd daughter Edith?) promises to be 'a finer child than her predecessor' (Margaret, died aged 1 in 1803?).
