IRELAND, THOMAS, son of William Ireland, verger, Westminster Abbey; bapt. 24 Nov 1632; adm.; KS; elected head to Christ Church, Oxford 1649, matr. 27 Feb 1650/1, Westminster Student; ejected from his Studentship by Dean Owen, and migrated to St. Mary Hall, Oxford; BCL 4 Jul 1659; adm. Gray’s Inn 26 Feb 1656/7; reinstated to Westminster Studentship at Christ Church 1660, but resigned it in 1664 to become a candidate for position of Reader in Moral Philosophy; Faculty Student, Christ Church 1665-75; licence for ordination 1672/3; Chancellor, Diocese of Durham 1674; according to Wood, Fasti Oxonienses, pt. ii, 200, Ireland “might have done greater matters had not his mind been diverted by the frequent indulgences of the poets”; recited on his knees in Christ Church Hall before Charles II and Catherine of Braganza on 29 Sep 1663 one hundred and sixteen Latin verses of his own composition, subsequently printed; d. Dec 1676.
