Inner Temple 16 Feb 1604/5, called to bar 8 Feb 1612/3, Bencher 1630, Treasurer 1637; practised in Court of Exchequer; Attorney-Gen. to Prince of Wales 1634; Counsel to Cambridge Univ. 1635; appeared for Strafford when impeached by House of Commons 1641, for Mr. Justice Berkeley 1641 and for the twelve bishops Jan 1641/2; MA Oxford 1 Nov 1642; DCL 31 Jan 1643/4; joined Charles I at Oxford; knighted 4 Jan 1643/4; Serjeant-at-Law 23 Jan 1643/4; Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer 25 Jan 1643/4; Lord Keeper of the Great Seal 25 Oct 1645; one of King’s Commissioners at Uxbridge Jan 1645/6; acted on King’s behalf at surrender of Oxford Jun 1646; followed Charles II into exile; Privy Councillor 13 May 1649 (sworn in at The Hague); author, Reports in the Court of Exchequer from 1605 to 1612, 1657; m.
