Le Hardy, William Henry Clement, son of William John Hardy, of St. Albans, Herts, by Margaret, daughter of Henry Page, and grandson of Sir William Hardy, Kt., deputy keeper of the Public Record Office; b. Aug. 5, 1889; adm. Sept. 24, 1903 (H); left July 1908; Exeter Coll. Oxon., matric. Michaelmas 1908; B.A. 1913; Capt. 3rd Batt. Royal Sussex Regt. Sept. 20, 1915; served on the western front and was wounded at Loos Dec. 23, 1914, and Sept. 25, 1915; M.C. Feb. 18, 1918; assumed the surname of Le Hardy in lieu of Hardy in 1920; Lieut.-Col. 23rd London Regt. (T. A.) Nov. 1, 1932; brevet Col. Nov. 5, 1936; reverted to rank of Major T. A. R. O. and was employed at the War Office Sept. 12, 1940; restored to Lieut.-Col. Oct. 11, 1942; D. A. A. G. 10th Corps in England and Middle East 1942; A. Q. M. G., G. H. Q. Middle East, 1942-3; O. C. A. 1923; part-time county archivist for Middlesex and also for Herts 1946-56 and was instrumental in recovering some early Middlesex records which include the coroner's inquest on the boy killed in Westminster Hall by John Elles (q.v.); full-time county archivist for Herts Jan. 1957; edited Notes and Extracts from the Sessions Records of the liberty of St. Alban' s div., forming vol. iv of the Herts County Records (1923), and the Calendar to the Records belonging to the County of Middlesex; m. 1st April 30, 1922, Doris Margaret, daughter of George Johnston, of Christleton, Cheshire; 2nd Sept. 24, 1932, Lucy Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Percival Fox Tuckett, of Porchester Terrace, London; d. Dec. 28, 1961.
