LOWTHER, Francis William, illegitimate son of William Lowther, 2nd Earl of Lonsdale PC FRS, and Emilia Cresotti, opera singer ; b. (Genoa, Italy) 20 Feb 1841 ; adm. 18 Oct 1851 (Scott) (as William Lowther : for the identification of him as Francis William Lowther, see F.Markham, Recollections of a Town Boy at Westminster, 1903, 100, where he is referred to as “Frank” Lowther) ; Cadet, Royal Navy 9 Feb 1854 ; Lieut., 3 Dec 1861 ; naturalised by Act of Parliament 10 Aug 1866 ; Cdr., 4 Apr 1869 ; retd. 9 Apr 1872 ; Capt. (on retired list) 8 Apr 1884 ; served in Second Chinese War ; partner, Punchard, McTaggart, Lowther & Co., engineers and contractors, to Jan 1900 ; m. 29 Apr 1868 Louise Beatrice, sister of Mildmay Barrington de Fonblanque (qv) ; d. 30 Mar 1908.
